About Roussillon

Roussillon, 15 minutes from the villa, is achingly beautiful. What makes it unique is its ochre quarry that accounts for the village's fantasy palette of reds, golds and yellows. The earth here is a blaze of rich colours - there are 17 shades of ochre to be found in Roussillon's quarry.

Less talked about is the fantastic ice cream you can buy at the artisanal shop on the way to the quarry - they have even more than 17 shades.

Roussillon shopping

The village itself has the winding streets, hidden corners, bistros and restaurants you would hope for in a Provence hilltop village, and if you walk up to the Castrum at the top you get some wonderful panoramic views across the valley to the Grand Luberon, the slopes of Mont Ventoux, and the plateau of the Vaucluse.

But what makes Roussillon stand out from the other Luberon villages is its otherwordly ochre quarry. It is no longer in use, so you can wander around and imagine you are in the canyons of Mars. A local of Roussillon discovered he could extract the colour from the soil, and the ochre industry was born. The rich warmth of the quarry's colours is everywhere in the village and its surrounding houses and hamlets.
