Mas de Jaime, Bonnieux, Provence

4-5 bedroom Provence vacation rental between the villages of Lacoste and Bonnieux

Mas de Jaime house

Le Mas de Jaime lies in that delightful part of the Luberon between Bonnieux and Lacoste, where there are few houses, many acres of cherry orchards and vineyards, and the close embrace of the Luberon mountain. The house can be either 4 or 5 bedrooms and prices vary accordingly.

Living Rooms

The kitchen with its dining area opens onto the outside eating area under a lean-to roof, providing shelter from sun and wind. In summer, as pictured here, the dining table goes outside. The kitchen is equipped with oven, 4-ring cooker, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, and a range of cooking aids. Washing machine and dryer are in the laundry room.

Bedrooms

The house has 4-5 bedrooms. One of the twin rooms is only suitable for children due to its size. One of the double bedrooms is in a separate little house in the garden, for extra privacy, and has its own bathroom. There is also a 'nanny room' downstairs next to bedroom 4 which can be used.

Master bedroom with en suite and private terrace.

The Master Bedroom has a large en suite bathroom and a great private terrace facing south (below right). The bed is 1.6m wide (5.25ft) and you can enjoy a framed view of Bonnieux through the window opposite the bed.

The Master Bathroom (above left) is large and light, with a bathtub and separate shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 3 for children. Bedroom 2 can be a double or two singles.

Also upstairs are bedrooms 2 and 3. Bedroom 2 has two single beds that can be brought together to make a 1.8m-wide double (6ft). Bedroom 3 is suitable for children as the beds are a little smaller than adult singles, 80cm wide.

Bathrooms for bedrooms 2 and 3.

There are two bathrooms upstairs for bedrooms 2 and 3 - one with bathtub and overhead shower, and one with basin and shower.

Spacious Bedroom 4 which opens onto the garden.

Bedroom 4 (above) is on the garden level, which in this part of the house is halfway between the ground and first floors. The bed can either be two 90cm singles (3ft), or a 1.8m-wide double. This is more of a suite than a bedroom, with a sofa area and French window onto the garden to the back of the house, which could also be a private entrance. There is a small shower room and WC downstairs.

The little house in the garden with bedroom 5. Hammocks in the trees outside the little house.

Bedroom 5, pictured below, is in a little house in the garden (above left) and has a double bed and bathroom with walk-in shower, basin and WC. If this bedroom is used, Mas de Jaime sleeps 10 instead of 8.

Garden & Pool

The garden has areas of lawn, orchard and wooded terraces. The pool is set a little apart from the house so you don't even know there is a pool unless you want to use it.

The pool and its view of Bonnieux.

The pool is 10m x 5m (33ft x 16ft). It has a rigid cover that you slide over electronically when the pool is not in use and makes it safe for wandering children. There is a safety step around the wall of the pool. The pool can be heated at cost, extending the swimming season into October.

Looking at the garden from the dining table. From the lawn, with the shading eating area on the left.

Next to the kitchen and dining room, through the ancient arched entrance, is the outdoor dining table (above left and below right). This area is totally sheltered from any mistral wind. In the months when you can't eat outside, the table goes in the dining room.

Sunny relaxing spot with Luberon view. Dining table by the kitchen, sheltered from sun and wind.

Around the garden are other seating areas, in shade and sun, as well as hammocks for post-lunch digestion. For the sporty there are a table tennis table and boules court (petanque).

Olive trees in the garden. Delightful lounging spot by the pool with mountain and sky in front.

In the garden you are embraced by the closeness of the Luberon mountain. There are typical Provencal plantings here, like olive trees, cypress, green oak, iris, lavender and rosemary.

The garden has several places to sit, some sunny, some shady.

The Location

The Luberon is one of the most beautiful parts of Provence - the scenery is an unspoilt tapestry of vineyards and wineries, fruit orchards and lavender fields, with here and there a hill-top village rising to tempt you with a bar and a few restaurants, maybe a market once a week. The setting of Mas de Jaime, between Bonnieux, Lacoste and Goult, is right in the heart of all this beauty.

Other notable 'perched villages' like Roussillon, Menerbes, Gordes, Goult, Lourmarin and Fontaine de Vaucluse are within 20 minutes. Avignon is one hour away and not much further are Arles, Nimes, Tarascon, Marseille and Aix en Provence.
