Maison de Caseneuve, Caseneuve, Provence

Exceptionally charming 3-bedroom village house with high views over the Luberon valley

Front of house in the village of Caseneuve. Fantastic kitchen and dining space with far-reaching view.

La Maison de Caseneuve dates back 400 years or so and has been restored to maintain all the charm of the old with the comfort of the new. It is available for weekly rentals, year-round.

Living Rooms

From the dining table you look down the length of the Luberon valley.

The house is set out over 3 levels with half-levels in between, and sleeps 6 in 3 double bedrooms. It is in a quiet little village in the Luberon valley that is totally off the tourist trail, only 10 minutes from the busy market town of Apt.

The top floor is a big, open, light space with a modern kitchen, dining and living room and a wonderful view down the Luberon valley.

The view from the top of the house is spectacular, with the Luberon mountain on the left - pictured here is only a part of the panorama.

The kitchen, pictured above, has dishwasher, oven, 4-ring stove, coffee machine, and fridge. There are quality pans and dinner service.

Up a level from the kitchen is a living room with modern wood-burning stove that rotates to face in different directions (picture left and right). Along with the underfloor heating and second fireplace downstairs this keeps the house warm in winter.

Cool in summer, warm and cosy in winter. A room for work or reading.

Also on this top level are the study, and next to that the master bedroom.

Bedroom 3 has 'click-clack' bed and opens onto inner courtyard.

Bedroom 3 (above right) is open to the staircase, there is a drape to pull across and block it off. It opens onto the inner courtyard.

The stunning bathroom is on the ground floor, built into the rock on which the village sits.

Amenities: along with the centuries of character you will find modern appliances - iPod speaker dock, CD/radio, washing machine, dishwasher, two fridges - but you will not find TV, phone line or internet.

Accessibility: the house is on different levels with steps in between so it is not suitable for people with limited mobility, or unsupervised toddlers.

Outside

At the front of the house is the sunny terrace with dining table and view over the rooftops along the valley.

There are two outside spaces, and you can eat at both of them

At the front of the house (above) is the place for sun and views.

The inner courtyard (pictured left and right) offers a cooler place with shade and very comfortable hammock. There is also a barbecue.

The Location

Caseneuve is in the Luberon to the east of Apt where the villages are as picturesque as their more famous neighbours, but very much on the road less travelled. It is a typical medieval, perched village, built on a hill, originally for protection, but now giving fantastic views over the Luberon.

Caseneuve is a very small, peaceful village built around its striking 11th-century Romanesque chateau. There is a restaurant in the village, 'Le Sanglier Paresseux' ('lazy boar'). The closest bakery is a couple of minutes away and the closest town is Apt 10 minutes away with its many shops, restaurants, cinema and a couple of supermarkets. Apt also has the biggest market in the region on Saturday mornings, which runs year-round.

Choosing Caseneuve as your base lets you experience real village life, and also puts you close to the highlights of the Luberon like Menerbes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, Gordes, and Oppedette. It is splendid hiking and biking country, you can set off right from your doorstep.

A stroll around Caseneuve is a step into the past, with its 11th century chateau (left), the house itself (centre) and the 18th century church.
