Provence House, Gordes, Provence

Stunning, large designer property near Gordes, sleeps up to 8

A house like no other, near the dreamy village of Gordes, in the Luberon region of Provence, it offers grand Provencal living with four bedrooms/four bathrooms, for weekly rentals. (Please note, children must be 7+ years old).

The joy of this property is that it is made up of two spacious houses, whose front doors face each other, each with 2 bedrooms, and each with a distinctive decor. What they share is a sense of space, both in terms of large volumes and in the amount of places that you can call your own - terraces, hidden patios, garden nooks - for couples spending time together this also means you can spend time apart and find a delightful spot to do your own thing.

Living Rooms

Contemporary living room with double-height ceiling and a wall of windows.

The contemporary living room (above) is full of fine books, art and curiosities, as well as a link to the outside world through TV/DVD. It is full of light and communes with the garden through the wall of French windows. Off this room is bedroom 1 and up the stairs is bedroom 2.

Dining room with amazing Provence decor. Cosy living room with fireplace, next to dining room.

Sharing a love of collecting art, the more traditionally Provencal part of the property has a dining room (above left) that could be a shrine to Provence, with an amazing collection of antique furniture and crockery, curiosities and objets trouvés, and santons (the figurines so typical of the region).

The kitchen is very well equipped, as the hosts like to entertain on a grand scale. In the summer you will usually want to eat outside, on the balcony (pictured above right) which overlooks the pool, or on the other side of the property, pictured at top left of this page, or in one of several other shaded spots you can choose from.

Bedrooms

The four bedrooms are completely private, no two bedrooms are even on the same floor, and each has its own outside space and en suite bathroom. There are three doubles and one twin room with two single beds.

Bedroom 1 (above), on the ground floor, opens on to the garden. The bed is 1.6m wide (5'2") and 2m long (6'6"). Between bedroom and bathroom is the dressing room.

The bathroom (right) has a bath with handheld shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 2 (above), is upstairs from bedroom 1, has two single beds and opens on to a private terrace. Its en suite bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 3 (above) has a 1.8m-wide bed (6ft), TV, and terrace with 180-degree views of the surrounding countryside. It also has air conditioning. The en suite bathroom comprises bathtub and wetroom-type shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 4 (above) opens on to the swimming pool area, and is like an artist's studio, large and light, and decked with paintings. There is an open-plan bathroom with walk-in shower. The WC is separate. The bed is 1.5m wide (5ft). This bedroom is accessed by stairs down from the ground floor.

Garden & Pool

The swimming pool is 10m long and has comfortable seating on sunloungers with mattresses, and tables for meals or drinks. To the side of the pool, in a lush dell of semi-tropical foliage, is another dining table (below left) - you can't have too many al fresco dining options. By the pool is a summer kitchen with cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher.

There is an abundance of outside spaces for eating, lounging and relaxing. In the summer you will find cooler spots amid the thick foliage.

Right at the top is the terrace of bedroom 3 with its view of the Luberon and three of the most beautiful villages (above right).

Above is the balcony closest to the kitchen and overlooking the pool.

The owners spend the summer months in another house on the same grounds but well away from the Provence House, so you are not aware of it, with its own access from the road. They are available if you have any problems or need any advice on restaurants, villages, events, etc. The owners have two well-behaved and friendly dogs.

The Location

The house is in quiet and beautiful countryside, right in the middle of the Petit Luberon, within the Golden Triangle of Gordes, Menerbes and Bonnieux, and very close to the other notable hill-top villages like Lacoste, Goult, Oppede le vieux, Roussillon and Lourmarin. Gordes is 4 miles away, Goult is 2.5 miles. The nearest village is St Pantaleon, but this has no shops. You can walk to Gordes across country in 30 minutes.

Other places of interest nearby: Isle sur la Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Avignon, etc.
