The Location

Scenes from L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, 5 minutes away.

Le Thor, 1km away, is a medieval village on the banks of the Sorgue river, with some of its 14th century walls and gates. It still has its castle and an elegant campanile (bell-tower). Le Thor is a good-size village with plenty of shops, some banks and a supermarket. Market days are Wednesday and Saturday.

Isle sur la Sorgue is 5km away and is the antiques capital of France. This is a village full of antique dealers, joined for the Sunday market by bric-a-brac dealers in the streets.

The best farmer's market in the region is the one at Velleron, 5km away. This takes place at the end of the day (6 days a week in summer, 3 days in winter): local farmers bring what they have picked that day, ensuring amazing freshness and low prices. This is not one of those markets designed for tourists - it is where real locals come to shop and it simply takes place in a parking lot on the side of the road. This is where you come for a real taste of Provence.

Le Thor is very well positioned for exploring Provence. Within 30 minutes to the east are all the famous hill-top villages of the Luberon like Menerbes, Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Goult, and Oppede le vieux. The beautiful spot where the Sorgue river gushes out of the ground at Fontaine de Vaucluse is a few minutes drive away.

The beautiful lively city of Avignon is 10 miles to the west - you are a short hop away from the summer arts festival that is known around the world. Aix en Provence, St Remy, Nimes, Arles, Les Baux, Marseille, the Camargue and Cassis are all an easy drive away. The Cote d'Azur is about 2.5 hours drive, and the Gorges du Verdon are also a day-trip away. The Rhone wine trail begins at Avignon and heads north to Chateauneuf de Pape, Gigondas, Cornas, Cote Rotie, etc. All around Le Thor and the Luberon are wineries you can visit for tastings.

In the long summer months there are festivals, concerts and other art happenings almost every night somewhere close by. The big arts festival at Avignon; the opera festivals at Aix and also in the amazing Roman amphitheatre at Orange; the world-class piano festival at Roque d'Antheron; the Musicales du Luberon; and the Lacoste festival courtesy of Pierre Cardin - these are the best known, but there are cultural events on every scale competing with each other all over the region.
