Bastide les Amis, Menerbes, Provence

5-bedroom restored house with pool and garden in an unbeatable village location - Menerbes in Provence

Bastide Les Amis is a 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom house in the village of Menerbes in the Luberon. The village centre with its restaurants, bar and shops is a 150m stroll away.

The property is made up of two adjoining houses together. Connection between the two is outside, both downstairs and upstairs. The larger of the houses is big enough for 10 people during the day, so the smaller house need only be used for sleeping. Or if two groups want a little privacy from each other, the property is ideally suited.

Living Rooms

Looking from the dining room to the kitchen, and beyond into the living room (above right).

The open-plan kitchen is very well equipped, including an AGA oven with 6-ring gas stove, dishwasher, large fridge-freezer and microwave. There is a separate laundry room off the kitchen with Miele washing machine and tumble dryer.

Through the kitchen is the living room with seating for 10 and a panoramic view of the valley in the front and the garden in the back. There is an impressive stone fireplace, TV/DVD and reading materials.

Decor is traditional Provencal French with elegant and functional furniture and fittings. The house has all the mod cons: flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, high-speed WiFi internet.

Bedrooms

All bathrooms are new and modern.

There are 5 bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms, with three bedrooms having en suite bathrooms.

Upstairs are three double bedrooms with 1.6m-wide (5.25ft) beds. Downstairs are a double with 1.6m bed, and a twin room with 90cm-wide (3ft) singles.

Bathrooms are finished to a high standard and are far removed from the old image of French plumbing.

Garden & Pool

Patio areas at the back with the garden rising on 4 terraced levels (left) and at the front with the view over the valley (right).

Through the arched doorway to the front there is a patio with dining table, outdoor barbeque and views of the valley beyond. To the back, outside the kitchen, is another table on the patio in the garden.

The pool is 9m x 3.8m with Roman steps at one end, poolhouse at the other, and comfortable sun loungers.

The mature garden is ablaze with colour in the spring and summer, and also has olive and fruit trees.

The garden has four terraced levels. The house sits on the first level. On the second level is the swimming pool with lounger chairs, an outdoor dining area and gas barbeque. On the third level are secluded spots to enjoy views of the valley below, stretching as far as the white-peaked Mont Ventoux. And on the top level is a grove of olive and fruit trees.

The garden is big for a village house. Above right is from one end of the garden, showing two of the four terraced levels. Pool is to the right of the house.

The Location

Menerbes on its hilltop from the north (left) and from the east (right).

The village of Menerbes is a wonderful location and ideal for exploring the rest of the Luberon and Provence. Menerbes has everything you need - cafe, restaurants, bakery, butcher and a small grocery store. You can even get the Herald Tribune and UK press when you walk in for your croissants or coffee in the morning.

All the other picture-perfect 'perched' hill-top villages of the Luberon are within 15 minutes by car: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages. For a guide to the area, including the villages, restaurants and markets, see TheLuberon.com.

You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.
