Living Room

This village house sleeps two in great comfort, and is beautifully furnished and decorated. Some of the furnishings are antiques, some, like the kitchen, are hand-made.

Entering the house.
Living room with kitchen at back and bedroom above.
Living room view over balcony.

The house was built as a peasant's dwelling and to maximise the available volume it has been renovated as one open space (apart from the bathroom), with the bedroom on a mezzanine above the living room and kitchen. This means all the light and glorious views pour into the whole house.

the windows that open onto the Luberon are remarkably generous. Eight feet high, and then there is the balcony beyond, with unmatched views, suspended over the full glory of Provence.

Dining table.

Antique writing desk.

The kitchen has a half-size oven and dishwasher, 4-ring cooker, coffee machine, electric juicer, kettle, fridge with small freezer compartment, washing machine and dryer, and waste disposal in the sink.

This property has high-speed wireless internet; satellite TV including CNN, BBC World and the terrestrial French channels; stereo with iPod jack; DVD player and movie library.

Bedroom

The bedroom with the view from the window over the rooftops of Menerbes, and the bathroom with walk-in shower.

The bed is an English king-size double, and is up on the mezzanine level. Even when you are in bed there are three different views to choose from - the Luberon Mountain, down the valley to the sunset, and over the rooftops of Menerbes.

The en-suite bathroom with hand-made tiles has a large walk-in shower, basin and WC.

Outside

Balcony from below.
Arriving at the front door.
High view over vineyards from balcony.

The sun terrace opens out from the living room, giving you a bigger plot of Menerbes real estate to stretch out in, sunbathe, pile on the pounds, take in the views.

The terrace with stunning view, table and chairs, and sun loungers.

The house has its own off-street parking space, a rarity in a hill-top village, and being at the top of Menerbes away from the centre, this is a quiet, peaceful setting. There is no traffic noise - the street is dead-end and only used by the few houses along it.

The Location

Menerbes on its hilltop from the north.

The square at the top.

High above the cares of the world, but just a two-minute stroll down the hill to the village life of Menerbes, this is an ideal year-round haven for nature lovers, food and wine lovers, and anyone who just loves Provence.

Menerbes rises up like a ship from the sea of vineyards that run along the Luberon valley. In French it is called a 'perched village'. It is notably a member of the prestigious assocation 'The Most Beautiful Villages of France'.

The village of Menerbes has ancient buildings, towers and churches, with narrow streets that wind their way up to the square at the top of the village. From up here there are lovely views of the surrounding countryside, the Luberon mountain and Mont Ventoux. The house is at this top level too, which sets it apart from the shops and restaurants a two-minute stroll down the hill.

In the centre of Menerbes are three restaurants, a bar, baker and butcher, and a grocery store. Also a useful ATM cash machine.

Menerbes is at the heart of the Luberon, a part of Provence that enjoys the benefits of a Mediterranean climate with none of the 'progress' so evident on the coast. This land is a protected natural park, and it is the closest thing to the idealised Provence we see in popular culture. In fact, Peter Mayle wrote his bestseller 'A Year in Provence' here in Menerbes. Picasso was equally inspired to install his mistress, the artist Dora Maar, in a house a few doors down from the house.

Within 15 minutes of Menerbes are other outstanding villages like Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

Scenes from Menerbes. There is a well stocked little grocery, bar, restaurants, baker and butcher.
