Maison Hulotte, Menerbes, Provence
Delightful 3-bedroom vacation rental house right in the village of Menerbes
Front of house. | Lunch on the top terrace. | Living room with work space above. |
Maison Hulotte is a very welcoming, spacious rental house in the gorgeous village of Menerbes, with a high, wide view over the vineyards and orchards of the Luberon valley. There are two double bedrooms and a walk-through children's bedroom, so the house can sleep 4 adults and 2 children. The centre of the village, with its restaurants and food shops, is just 100 metres away.
The view from the house is of vineyards, fields and orchards, with the Mont Ventoux in the background.
Living Rooms
This is an old stone village house that has been renovated to include modern comforts, along with the elements of the past that we cherish, like exposed beams and an open fireplace.
Sitting room when you come into the house. | The kitchen with dining table |
On the ground floor are a sitting room and the large, high-ceilinged kitchen with dining table. The kitchen has a big cooker (a range) with double oven and 5 gas burners, perfect for preparing all the Provencal produce you have sourced at the local markets. There are dishwasher, fridge/freezer, microwave, espresso machine and electric kettle. In a side room is the washing machine.

The master bedroom, with its double aspect, runs the width of the house.
The master bedroom runs the full width of the house, with the valley view by the bed, and at the other end a sitting area and big patio doors onto the terrace above the inner courtyard. Here you can have breakfast outside or read in the sunlounger. The master bedroom has a 1.8m wide bed (6ft).

Outside
The terrace outside the master bedroom. | The inner courtyard outside the kitchen. |
There are two outside spaces. On the ground floor is the inner courtyard formed by the rock of Menerbes and the back of the house - this is outside the kitchen and has table and chairs for 6. Up the stairs (pictured above) takes you to the top terrace outside the master bedroom (pictured above left).

The Location
Menerbes on its hilltop from the north. | The square at the top. |
Menerbes rises up like a ship from the sea of vineyards that run along the Luberon valley. In French it is called a 'perched village'. It is notably a member of the prestigious assocation 'The Most Beautiful Villages of France'.
The village of Menerbes has ancient buildings, towers and churches, with narrow streets that wind their way up to the square at the top of the village. From up here there are lovely views of the surrounding countryside, the Luberon mountain and Mont Ventoux. The house is 1 minute's stroll to the centre of the village.
In the centre of Menerbes are three restaurants, a bar, baker and butcher, and a grocery store. Also a useful ATM cash machine.
Menerbes is at the heart of the Luberon, a part of Provence that enjoys the benefits of a Mediterranean climate with none of the 'progress' so evident on the coast. This land is a protected natural park, and it is the closest thing to the idealised Provence we see in popular culture. In fact, Peter Mayle wrote his bestseller 'A Year in Provence' here in Menerbes. Picasso was equally inspired to install his mistress, the artist Dora Maar, in a house a few doors down from the house.
Within 15 minutes of Menerbes are other outstanding villages like Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.
Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.
