Maison Olive, Menerbes, Provence

3-bedroom rental house with pool and big garden right in the beautiful village of Menerbes

Arriving at the house, Maison Olive is on the right.

This part of the garden belongs to Maison Olive.

Maison Olive is a Provence rental house for 6 that has everything going for it: a great location, in the sought-after hill-top village of Menerbes, a large garden, and a pool, both rarities for a village house. The house also has new and very comfortable furniture and important modern touches like WiFi internet, satellite TV and good bathrooms.

Maison Olive is attached to the 2-bedroom Maison Blanc next door, and the pool is shared. But each house has a separate part of the large gardens.

Living Rooms

The house sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms, the master bedroom and en suite bathroom are upstairs, and the other two bedrooms and bathroom are downstairs.

Also downstairs is the living room/dining room (left) with wood-burning fireplace, plasma TV with satellite channels and DVD player, hi-fi, and wireless internet.

Off this room is the garden and terrace, and the kitchen (below) to the side.

Garden & Pool

Maison Olive has its own private part of the garden (pictured below), which is spacious and lawned with big oak trees providing shade. There is a table and chairs for 8 people. There is also a terrace to the back with a barbecue.

The pool is to the back of the house and is shared with the owners (when in residence). It is 9 x 3.8 metres with comfortable sun loungers and deckchairs. The pool has an alarm, in compliance with French pool regulations.

There is off-street parking for more than one car. The road is only used by residents so it is a quiet, peaceful setting, and only 2 minutes stroll to the centre of the village.

Pool is 9 x 3.8 metres (30 x 12 ft) with Roman steps at one end, and is shared with the owners if they are in residence.

The garden is unusually large for a village house.

Front door of the house is up the steps.

Location

Menerbes on its hilltop from the north. The square at the top.

Menerbes attained fame 20 years ago when Peter Mayle wrote A Year in Provence while he lived just outside the village. For a while Menerbes was on the tour buses' itinerary, but now it has slipped back to its old self, without losing any of the beauty that drew Mayle here. The village has a grocery store, butcher and baker, four restaurants and two bars. All of this is 150 metres from the house. Menerbes is one of the 'perched villages' which the Luberon is noted for - villages piled on top of hills for protection from invading armies and plagues - an arrangement that today has visitors reaching for their cameras at every turn.

Menerbes rises out of the valley of vineyards and orchards like a ship hugging the coastline of the Luberon mountain. It is in the Luberon Natural Park, which ensures that new building is strictly limited. You can walk from the village onto hiking paths into the mountain, or cycle from one village to the next.

Menerbes is very well located for the other perched villages of the Luberon - Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult are 5-15 minutes away by car - as well as must-see towns like Avignon, St Remy, Arles, Marseille, Nimes, and Aix en Provence. The Mediterranean is just over an hour away, and the French Riviera 2.5 hours.
