La Jaume, Menerbes, Provence

Stunning barn conversion half a mile from Menerbes, 3 bedrooms plus studio, sleeps 8

La Jaume is close to the village of Menerbes in beautiful Provence countryside.

La Jaume is a converted old barn that brings the cool of modern design to Provence. From the beautifully equipped kitchen to the huge deck round the pool with a view, the house has been created around the idea of modern comforts and timeless pleasures.

Living Rooms

On the ground floor the kitchen, dining room and living room are all open-plan and open onto the south-facing terrace and garden.

The living room has a funky wood-burning stove, TV/DVD, WiFi internet and very comfortable L-shaped sofa.

The kitchen is open-plan with the dining room and beyond that the living room.

The kitchen in wood and steel has 4-ring cooker, oven, dishwasher, coffee machine, big fridge-freezer with wine cabinet. The dining table is next to the kitchen and beyond that is the outside dining table.

Bedrooms

There are three double bedrooms in the main house, with two bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs, as well as two separate WCs. The poolhouse can be used as a studio sleeping 2.

Bedroom 3 with work desk.

Bedroom 3 has a 140cm double bed and a work-desk.

The downstairs bathroom (pictured here) has a shower and basin, and there is a separate WC next to it.

Also in this part of the house, down a corridor from the kitchen, is the laundry room with washing machine and dryer.

Garden & Pool

The large garden extends over lawn and vineyard to the pool and poolhouse set 60 metres from the house (the pool has a rigid cover for security). Beyond the pool is a wooded hill and this is a garden that provides a good play area for children as well as interest for adults.

By the house is a tiled patio with wooden table and chairs, and barbecue, shaded by the pergola.

After the lawn is a small vineyard and then cherry trees. The pool is out of sight to the left, 60 metres from the house. The garden in summer.

The pool is big enough to swim lengths - 17 x 5m (56 x 16 ft) and is part of a particularly appealing pool area. There is a vast wooden deck all around, edged by carefully planted stone beds, and it is deliberately placed at a high part of the land for the view over to Mont Ventoux, 60 metres from the house. The pool is solar heated, which raises the temperature a few degrees and extends the swimming season. An electonically operated sliding, rigid cover is provided in compliance with French pool regulations (but does not replace careful parental supervision).

The pool house has a summer kitchen with cooker, microwave, fridge and dishwasher and an outside table and chairs for meals. There are showers inside and out, and a WC.

Inside the pool house are kitchen, bathroom, sofa-bed and mezzanine bed.

If you need extra sleeping quarters in addtion to the 3 bedrooms in the main house, the pool house can sleep two people, either on the mezzanine or the fold-out sofa-bed. There is a bathroom with walk-in shower, basin and WC.

The Location

The house is in a favoured location, in the Luberon area of Provence. This is the special part of the world that reached a wider audience with Peter Mayle's 'A Year in Provence' , and the recent movie 'A Good Year', both based in the Luberon.

The closest village is Menerbes, which is 800m (half a mile) away. Menerbes has restaurants, cage, grocery, bakery and butcher, as well as more unusual attractions dedicated to living well - the House of Wine and Truffles, and the Corkscrew Museum.

Other notable hill-top villages within 15 minutes are Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Goult, and Oppede le vieux.

Other places of interest nearby: Lourmarin, Isle sur la Sorgue, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Avignon, etc.
