Garden & Pool

The gardens are arranged over different levels and are lovingly designed and planted - waves of vegetation give year-round interest, and you are encouraged to cut your own flowers for bouquets. Some of the scents you’ll experience: rosemary, lavender, santolina, wild thyme, artemisias and over 100 roses. There are 18 acres of gardens, fields and woods to explore around La Jauberte, including a lavender field and olive trees.

There are several outside spots for eating and relaxing as the mood takes you: a balcony off the living room, a vine-shaded terrace below, various garden levels and trees to set out a table and chairs amid the glorious sights and fragrances, and generally live the good life.

The swimming pool is solar-heated, to extend the swimming season into spring and autumn. There are comfortable sun loungers and a superb view. Guests have first use of the pool - if the owners are in residence they may take a swim when guests are out exploring.

Hand-hewn, dry stone walls - works of art in themselves - break up the garden into terraces, for roaming and contemplating the hills and the light.

Guests have their own exclusive part of the garden, with various dining spots according to the time of day. There is also a sheltered courtyard with herb garden. You are encouraged to cut your own flowers for bouquets.

La Jauberte is part of three houses on the same property. The other two are the owners' and the caretaker. The owners are an English-speaking couple who are in residence about half the year. How much you see of them is entirely up to you: some guests do not see them at all, others find their local recommendations and insights invaluable.

You are not aware of the owners' house from La Jauberte as both face out the same way and La Jauberte has its own part of the garden.

The Location

Some call it the 'real' Provence because this part of the Luberon is more dramatic and less visited than the area to the west with the popular villages of Gordes and Roussillon, which are half an hour away. Here the hill-top villages like Viens, Caseneuve and Saignon are on the road less travelled, but no less delightful.

The eastern part of the Luberon is noted for its wild, natural beauty. This is a land of gentle rolling hills, garrigue and lavender, where memorable hikes and bike rides start right from your doorstep. The English-speaking owners of La Jauberte are keen walkers and cyclists and are happy to share their local knowledge, you may even find yourself helping out at the lavender refinery down the road.

The perched village of Viens is 2 miles from the house and has a small food store, bar/restaurant and specialist honey shop. The nearest town is Apt, 15 minutes away, where you will find supermarket, cinema, restaurants and the biggest market in the Luberon, on Saturday morning all year round.
