L'Arome,
Bonnieux
|
"L'Arome
is a new restaurant (opened 2007) in Bonnieux, just
slightly down the hill from Le Fournil. Le Fournil
was closed when we headed to town and L'Arome was
the closest open restaurant, so we opted for it, and
are very
glad we did. It is run by Clara and Jean-Michel.
The waiter
that served us unfortunately did not speak English
so we muddled our way through the menu and seemed
to make it fairly well. There is a 29 euro menu and
a 38 euro menu, both offering entrée, main
and dessert (three
options for each), with coffee and wine extra. The
wine menu is comprehensive - expect to spend at least
20-30 euros per bottle.
Lunch was
very good. We opted for the 29 euro menu each. There
are "safe" dishes and some that are a bit
more scary. I tried the Rognon de Veau (calf liver)
and it was delicious - the chef is a genius. All three
courses were cooked to perfection, and served in a
very timely fashion. There are also vegetarian options,
along with a large number of "a la carte"
options should
you wish to deviate from the set menus. Although we
did not try any fish dishes (this time), there were
a lot to choose from and some French websites speak
very highly of them.
Total bill
for a demi of wine, and lunch for two, came to 83
euros, much nicer than the previous day's bill at
Prevot in Cavaillon! We will be
visiting again."

| Auberge
de la Loube - Buoux
Buoux
is a tiny hamlet in the middle of the Luberon range, reached
by a thrilling drive through steep-sided, hairpin bends
in between Bonnieux, Sivergues and Apt.
The
Auberge de la Loube is idyllic year-round. In the summer
there is the terrace with great views, in the winter you
sit inside with a big open fireplace. It is a rustic, charming
old inn.
The
Auberge de la Loube is famous for its Provencal hors d'oeuvres:
your table gets a tray groaning with small ramekins full
of local specialties: aubergine caviar, aioli, braised artichokes,
brandade of cod, olives, hummus, olive tapenade, quail eggs,
caramelized onions, etc.
After
that, the lamb is superb, however it's cooked.

"It
is a quaint, small streetside restaurant, lovely
views of Bonnieux in the distance at night when
sitting outside. Staff were obliging as there
were a few errors to the orders throughout the
night and they did not make too much fuss about
changing anything, I would not quite go so far
as to call the welcome "chaleureux",
but gracious enough.
Initially
the food was rushed out a bit and some of our
dishes had to wait for us to get to them but
towards the end of the night as the place got
busier, it took quite a while to get attention.
The
food was quite tasty with a few things such
Pigeonneaux which offerred a touch of difference.
The wine list offerred a good spread of wines
from the area though some of the finer local
wines were extremely expensive, being local
wines and all. Overall the experience was satisfactory.
"C'est correct" is the french approximation."

Bastide

|
"Edouard
Loubert's 2-star restaurant. This used to be
at the Moulin de Lourmarin, but Loubert moved
his outfit to the outskirts of Bonnieux (route
de Lourmarin). Tempting and expensive menus,
but we opted for the à la carte,
and I'm glad we did: we ordered 2 yummy dishes
each, and ended up receiving 6 dishes each altogether!
Love those complimentary dishes
Bastide

regional cuisine. Bring a solid credit card

"Though
the food can be quite good and the location
wonderful ..especially when you arrive at sunset
and can sit on terrace with the view.
2 dinners both in 2007 and 2008 were most disappointing.
Both were with a group of friends (6 persons).
There was even a 3rd try for 4 persons. The
attitude that the staff or mgmt had was so discouraging
and rude. Our last dinner the food was so delayed
in arriving to the table - with no apologies
..we sat down to dinner at 8:00 PM and by 11:00
PM we still had not been offered dessert and
any "we are so sorry for so many delays.
We
would never return there, nor would our friends,
and we spend a lot time in the Luberon area
and dine out a lot. Sometimes you get only a
few chances to captivate your dining audience
and by captivate I mean - entertain and appreciate
they they have come to experience your restuarant,
staff...and you are paying. Can't tell you how
baffled we all were at the end of our Summer
'07 experience. One of our party actually said
to the host "Don't you care about what
we think and why we are so unhappy"?
Proceed with caution - stick to La Fournil in
Bonnieux - they care.."

La
Bastide de Marie - near Menerbes
The
setting is magical, and is matched by the food. La
Bastide de Marie is a luxury small hotel in the vineyards
of the Luberon valley near Menerbes. The menu is decided
by what was best at the market that day, and you don't
have to spend long wondering what to have - there
is a choice of two dishes for each of three courses
chalked on the blackboard outside the kitchen. This
is an area where you get your aperitif, nibbles, and
have a good look at the gleaming kitchen behind a
wall of windows.
In
the summer you sit outside on the terraces around
the Bastide. In cooler months there is a heated outside,
covered area, and then there is the inside proper.
Service
and food are excellent, and the last time we were
there it cost 50 euros a head including wine from
the Bastide's own vineyard - an absolute bargain!
Reservation
well in advance is essential because there are only
two tables a night available for non-hotel guests.

La
Bergerie - Maubec
This
pizzeria snuggles against the hillside of Maubec and
has a large covered terrace with good views. The food
is straightforward, and always good. Service is charming
and efficient. They offer a wide choice of pizzas,
salads, pastas, meat dishes and a menu du jour. Food
is served on rustic wooden platters with super sharp
knives.
For
a restaurant promoting itself as a pizzeria, La Bergerie
has an elegant ambience; a place you can feel comfortable
in jeans or get more dressed up for. It is usually
busy and if you want to sit outside you'll need to
book.
I
went as a party of 11 and our main course, pudding,
champagne aperitifs and wine came to just under 30E
per person.

Clementine
- Menerbes
A
cheap and cheerful place with a great view north over
the Luberon valley towards the Mont Ventoux. Don't
expect great food at Clementine. Weather permitting
you eat on a nice terrace under a vine-clad trellis.
If you have to eat indoors, it's on the gaudy side.

"Worst
restaurant we've ever eaten at in Provence.
When we were there in August 07, many tables
complained about the wait (we waited 50 mins

Clementine appears to be badly managed, and
the restaurant could not cope at all - our waitress

L'Estellan
- Les Imberts
L'Estellan
has very good food and is less expensive than comparable
places nearby - i.e. Mas Tourteron or Bastide de Marie
- and the menu is also more interesting. There are
fixed-price menus of 29 and 38 euros, and à
la carte would set you back around 50 euros.
L'Estellan
is a good place for vegetarians. In most Provence
restaurants there is only one non-meat dish for each
course, but here the emphasis is on vegetables and
fish. Starters include simple mixed leaf salad and
a more adventurous carpaccio of sea-bass, or langoustine
soup with squid.
The
main course scallops were quite delicious, fat, plump
and totally fresh. Shoulder of rabbit with mashed
potatoes and carré d'agneau were both
exemplary.
There
is a choice of about 6 desserts, including the inevitable
crème brulée, which is very good, and
a couple of lovely chocolatey things.
The
setting is very pleasant, both inside and out, but
here both Mas Tourteron and la Bastide de Marie have
the advantage, with their idyllic situations. At l'Estellan
the palate is beige, écru and white, the décor
is warm and appealing, and there is a nice terrace
at the back. There is something a little odd going
on with what look like tea-towels on a clothes line
hanging from the ceiling, but it all seems to work
well together and the exposed stone of the walls adds
to the Provencal ambience. Well worth a detour.
Note:
Although l'Estellan is usually described as being
in Gordes, it isn't, it is in Les Imberts, a couple
of miles from Gordes, and you won't want to walk it
if you are staying in Gordes.

Le
Fournil - Bonnieux
Le
Fournil is the perfect combination of great food,
great setting, and a reasonable price. It's built
into the rock on which Bonnieux sits and the interior
is arty and interesting, you could almost say 'hip'
but not in an unpleasant way.
But
the joy of Le Fournil is sitting outside in the summer,
in a little village square crowned by an old stone
fountain. Here the décor and furniture is simpler,
and it's a fabulous place to feel the wine take over
your senses and understand what food in the Luberon
is all about.
The
food is modern, mixing Provence with outside influences:
for instance a cappuccino of mussels and mushrooms;
and roast duckling with figs, quince and honey.
Fixed
price dinner at Le Fournil is 36 euros, at lunch it
is more like 25 euros for 3 courses.
|
"Le
Fournil is the perfect combination of excellent
food, fine wines, tip top service and P0rovencal
ambience. The beautiful terrace is almost like
a stage where the patron has the leading role
and the guests play the supporting parts. In
one word: Merveilleux. Also
be sure to look out for the 'figue farcies de
foie gras' and the 'chocolat du moment'. Both
are pure excellence.
"I give Le Fournil an A+."

"Just
about as perfect a mood you could wish for -
lunch under a canopy looking at the glistening
water fountain with the ribblets of sunlight
filtering through - with excellent food served
by understanding professional waitering staff
- dinner even more spectacular with filtered
light over white linen table cloths, a wine
list to kill for and food that would please
the most fastidious gastronome - if this place
was open through winter with a raging log fire
and the Mistral blowing - it would be the French
version of Jamaica Inn - without the cold intrigue
of a dubious plot. 6 stars out of 6...."

Jardin
d'Ivana - Oppede
If
you can't get an invitation from a local to join them for
lunch in their back garden, then come here instead. Jardin
d'Ivana is a family restaurant run from a small garden at
the foot of Oppede-le-vieux, dominated by a pool (which
you are free to use) and two almond trees.
The
hosts are charming, very relaxed and accommodating (we were
a party of 8 with toddlers, babies and vegetarians in tow).
They offered a 'menu du jour' of 4 courses and a 3-course
kids' menu. The food was unpretentious and tasty.
The
day we ate here, the 13-euro menu du jour was a cold cucumber
soup (or hot carrot risotto soup), crostini, courgette and
salmon quiche and chocolate pudding. Coffee, wine and water
included. The dinner menu is 23 euros.
The
kids enjoyed ravioli, frankfurters and chocolate pudding
for 4.5 Euros.
If
you want to be inside, you need to book.
The
pool is not fenced in, so if you're nervous about non-swimming
children near a pool this may mar an otherwise relaxing
lunch.

Le
Jardin du Quai - Isle sur la Sorgue
Le
Jardin du Quai is a newish restaurant getting great reviews
in the region. Chef Daniel Hebet spent 7 years at La Mirande,
the best hotel in Avignon, with a fabled restaurant. Here
at his own place in Isle sur la Sorgue, he offers his simple
Provence fare with the occasional fancy flourish, and the
quality is very high indeed.
The
key is in the freshness of the ingredients and the menu
is dependent on what the chef finds in the markets that
morning, and decided there and then. So you don't really
get a choice, you are just told what there is. If you are
vegetarian or have a food allergy, they can provide an alternative.
Daniel
Hebet describes his food as rustic but refined. We had a
wonderful dinner. Prawns with a hint of soy were followed
by almost sushi-like salmon in a sort of fusion broth, with
fine strips of asparagus. The pork was exquisitely tender,
accompanied by a simple mashed potato and jus. (The vegetarian
replacement was monkfish.)
You
will love his desserts - he was voted France's best pastry
chef a few years ago.
The
wine list is limited to local wines, but he has unearthed
some good ones. The Cairanne Pavillon des Dames we had at
30 euros was better than a Cairanne should hope to be.
A dinner
of four courses costs 40 euros per person - a bargain!
Le
Jardin du Quai is in a renovated old town house, with an
antique bar in a different room to the main dining room.
Decoration is subdued - nothing to distract you from the
quality of the food. In the summer you can enjoy the shade
of the plane trees in the pretty garden.
|
"Four
of us had a delightful outdoor Sunday lunch after
the market. It was blazing hot and the restaurant
had just received a rave review in the local paper
so it was packed. After chaos and a long wait, chef
arrived at our table with apologies, some interesting
Luberon wines and presented personally tender veal
chops with figs and a rich wine reduction. The dishes
were all beautiful to look at and the afternoon was
a success. We will definately return on our next visit
to the Luberon."

"We
visited this hidden little gem twice on our stay.
Its one of those places you only ever read about until
you get to experience it. Fixed price every day (about
35 euros for lunch and 40 euros for dinner), for a
three-course meal that changes from day to day. All
in all, we tried 6 different dishes here on our two
visits, and we could describe each one back in exquisite
detail. The chef is worth his weight in gold, and
the waitstaff speak very good English and are very
friendly and attentive. There are about 20-30 wines
to choose from, along with a full bar for all your
more complicated alcoholic desires. The coffee is
great also (a few places we've dined have been quite
average). We will be visiting here again on our next
trip to the Luberon."

Le
Mas Tourteron - Les Imberts
Le
Mas Tourteron has one of France's best woman chefs (some
say the best) at the helm - Elisabeth Bourgeois. The quality
of food here is high, and the indoor and outdoor settings
are beautiful. Outside there is a walled garden with lovely
trees bedecked with lanterns and hats. Inside the room is
very welcoming, with ornaments and paintings on the walls,
thick white table-cloths, napkin rings made of bread. Le
Mas Tourteron is in an 18th century Provencal mas.
Portions
are on the small side but that is made up for by the tremendous
dessert buffet, which you can re-visit until you are totally
sated. Expect to be freed of at least 50-60 euros a head.

Maison
Gouin - Les Imberts
Maison
Gouin started out as an upmarket delicatessen/butcher,
then expanded to a dining room at the back, and also
an outside eating space. That's not to say you will
be eating in a shop - the restaurant part is separate
and warmly decorated. You get what is on the blackboard,
no choice except for the cheese. At lunch there is
more choice because the shop is open and they can
make what you want. Four courses come to 32 euros
- for the quality that is very good. For the wine
you go down to the cellar and pick a bottle yourself
(the prices are marked). Food is good, very meaty,
and filling.
Maison
Gouin is also a good place to buy high-quality food,
other than fruit and vegetables, although it is not
the cheapest shop in the world.

"It
is a bit of a surprise. First it is right on
the main road in a little town that, for Provence
where nice villages abound, has not got much
to speak of. That is until you get out of the
car and walk around a bit... If going at night,
any night you must book ,otherwise you are unlikely
to get a table.
The décor is very pleasing to the eye,
and when you sit down they immediately bring
you a cool glass of home made orange wine. A
very fresh and lovely start to the evening.
Someone will then come and tell you what you
will eat this evening. No menus, just a set
3-course meal + cheese and coffee. You are then
invited to walk down to the cellar and select
you wine. Do not hesitate to ask the owner which
wine he would recommend with the meal. After
all it is his cellar! The waiters will assist
as well if asked.
We had: - Risotto draped in pumpkin soup.
- Fillet of hare with a medley of mushrooms
and baked apple.
- Self-serve cheese buffet with a variety of
at least 20 different local cheeses.
- Baked banana slices on a home made bread pudding
with a scoop of chocolate ice cream on the side.
The whole meal was delicious from the first
bite. If you are a vegetarian and warn them
of this, at booking, they will accommodate you
with seafood or vegetable dishes. If something
unusual is on the menu such as venison and you
would prefer not to have that, they might offer
a simpler alternative.
The
cheese buffet is unexpected and quite impressive
and dessert just a feat to the taste buds. All
of this for a very reasonable 80 Euros for 2
people incl wine.
Maison
Gouin is a must try for anyone in search of
a slightly different culinary experience. Highly
recommended."

"Prevot
is a very decadent restaurant, run by Jean-Jacques
Prevot. We visited there for lunch one day,
and were greeted by a very friendly waiter.
We placed our order for aperitif, entree, main,
and wine, and left him to it. Two appetisers
came out one after the other with the aperitifs,
followed by our entree, then main course. There
was not a chance we could fit dessert in so
we ordered coffee, and with it came a plate
of goodies.
All in all the restaurant is very generous with
its free dishes, however it ought to be: The
prices for the meals are quite extravagant.
And while the meals were nice, we had much better
food at other places for a fraction the price.
You really pay for the atmosphere and the service
here more than the food itself, from what we
both found. There was a 130 euro fixed menu
option that used truffles in all the dishes,
however I don't know if I'd want to risk that
kind of money when we weren't completely satisfied
with our more simple dishes."

La
Prévôté - Isle sur la Sorgue

"This
is by far one of the best restaurants in the
Luberon. The food is absolutely spectacular.
From lobster and foie gras to pigeon with figs
each bite was mouth watering. Each course is
cooked to perfection. The river runs underneath
the restaurant and there is a small beautiful
courtyard you can dine in when the weather is
nice."

"In
Menerbes we tried La Rabasse in the centre of
town. Plenty of truffle dishes to try - we had
a wonderful meal and the husband and wife team
that run the place provided wonderful service
despite our poor attempts at speaking French."

Restaurant
de l'Horloge- Cucuron
|
"In
Cucuron, since La Petite Maison was closed,
a local artist recommended a place around the
block named Restaurant de l'Horloge and it was
excellent value with excellent food.
The
lunch was 4 courses, including dessert and wine,
and coffee for 17.50 euros. There were some
choices for each category of the courses - appetizer,
salad, main course, dessert. The desserts were
unbelievable.
It
is downstairs in an old wine cave - every one
of us loved it.
Restaurant
de l'Horloge is owned by Paticia and Pascal
Combet-Robert and they refer to their food as
'une cuisine aromatique aux accents Provencaux'."
