The bastide is set in 5000 square metres of garden, with areas of lawn and gravel, high shading trees, climbing roses bursting with colour, and a swimming basin discreetly to the side.

The garden is bordered with fruit orchards, growing apricots, peaches and apples.

The swimming basin is 10m x 2m (33 x 7ft) and alongside is a trellised tunnel of climbing roses. There are sunloungers and deckchairs for the pool area.

The pool is very enticing, with its rich verdant surround, stone border and roman steps at one end.

The large courtyard is the heart of the bastide in the summer. Bedrooms look onto it, the kitchen spills out into it, and people eat there, play petanque or ping pong, and find a shaded spot under a tree or trellis.

Across the courtyard from the main house, the barn (pictured right) provides a dramatic space for dinner, with its high beamed roof and spectacular chandelier.
