La Villa Gordes

La Villa Gordes is a 3-bedroom villa half a mile from the restaurants and shops of Gordes, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France. This house has everything for an idyllic Provence vacation: outstanding location, private pool, large charming garden, and the far-reaching views.

The middle window is the dining/living room and kitchen, the left and right windows are the two bedrooms.   The large garden is full of olive and cherry trees and even has two very lovely bories - old dry-stone shepherds' huts - so typical of the area.

La Villa Gordes sleeps 6 in three bedrooms, two with air conditioning. The garden is 1.5 ha (3.7 acres) and includes cherry and olive trees, and two bories - the historic old shepherd's huts built like stone igloos.

Gordes (seen from the garden on the left) is 600 metres away, easily reached on foot.

The pool is private and has the high view over the Luberon valley to the mountain, including Bonnieux and Roussillon. It is 9m x 4m and secured by a rigid sliding cover.

Dining room with seating for six   Large living room with satellite TV, DVD, and hi-fi

The dining room and living rooms open onto the pool area. The living room has TV and DVD, satellite TV including CNN and BBC international channels, and hi-fi/CD player. There is comfortable seating on sofas and armchairs for 6. Both rooms are light and spacious and look south to the view. Over the dining room windows there are awnings to keep the summer sun out.

The house is well equipped for 6 people and more for meals - there is plenty of crockery and glassware.

Left - this shows how close it is from the dining room to the pool, so this house is not suitable for children who cannot swim.

Right - the kitchen includes fridge/freezer, oven, 4-ring halogen stove, microwave, coffee machine, kettle, dishwasher, clothes washer. And there is a lovely view through the big windows to the terraced garden at the back.

BEDROOMS

There are 2 bedrooms with a double bed, and one which can be either a double bed or two singles. There are 2.5 bathrooms. Bedrooms 1 and 2 are upstairs and bedroom 3 is downstairs.

Bedrooms 1 and 3 have a 1.6m-wide bed (5' 3"), and bedroom 2 is either a 1.4m-wide (4' 6") double or two single beds of 90cm width (3ft). Bedrooms 1 and 3 have air conditioning. If you leave the doors of bedrooms 1 and 2 open, bedroom 2 can also benefit from air conditioning.

Bedroom 1 with air conditioning and TV, and the view to Roussillon from the window. The en suite bathroom has large corner bath and walk-in shower.

Bedroom 2 and its splendid view to the Luberon.

Bedroom 3 downstairs and its view to the back garden.

Bathrooms: Upstairs is an en suite bathroom for bedroom 1 with bath and shower, and bedroom 2 has a half-bathroom with WC and basin. Downstairs, bedroom 3 has its own bathroom with shower, WC and basin.

POOL AND GARDEN

The pool is 9m x 4m, with Roman steps at the shallow end. There is a sliding electric cover which can take the weight of an adult, for security.   Next to the pool are sunloungers with mattresses, and a table and 6 chairs under the shade of a tree.

There are striking roses and oleander around the pool. Under the oak tree is a table and chairs for eating outside.

The garden is 3.7 acres and is on different levels, with lovely old olive trees, cherry trees and oak. There are two bories, which are the dry stone huts built by shepherds long ago - they are very picturesque and also fun for children.

The garden is not suitable for letting toddlers play in unattended because there are places where there is a 10ft drop to the next level. With this and the proximity of the pool to the house, any children in your party must be old enough to swim.

This is the stone borie in the back garden and a beautiful olive grove behind it.

There are great views from the garden and the pool area of the Luberon plain all around, with its patchwork of vineyards and orchards, and some of the famed hill-top villages of the region - Roussillon, Bonnieux, and Gordes itself.

Left - private shaded parking for two cars by the house. The house is 200 metres away from the road, which is itself a quiet road as it is for residents only.

Right - a quiet reading spot on the
south-facing patio outside
the living room

The owners of the Villa Gordes live next door. They are a working couple but in the evening they are available if you need help with anything, from language difficulties to recommendations to anything more serious like medical urgencies.

THE LOCATION
Gordes (left and centre) is perhaps the most beautiful village in Provence. Senanque Abbey (right) with its fields of lavender is just outside Gordes.

Gordes is the biggest of the Luberon hill-top villages and apart from being very beautiful, it is the best-served by restaurants, cafes, shops and cultural events, so it is an ideal base from which to explore the Luberon and Provence.

The Luberon is studded with these stunning hill-top villages, each with its own character, and you can peruse them by clicking on the links to the right. Each is a short drive away.

You'll find a market every day at a different village, including the one in Gordes on Tuesday mornings.

Away from the Luberon, the rest of Provence is at most a day-trip away: the cities of Avignon, Aix, Arles, Nimes, Marseille; the natural wonders of the Gorges du Verdon, the Alps and the Rhone wine trail; the French Riviera (Cote d'Azur) from Monte Carlo to St Tropez. Even Italy and Spain are in striking distance.
