Carrieres de Lumieres

This attraction used to be called the Cathedral of Images (Cathedrale des Images), it has been relaunched as Carrieres de Lumieres (Quarry of Light) and offers the same type of show: a projection of striking images in a disused stone quarry.

For 2012 the show is "Gauguin, van Gogh, painters of colour". This traces the two artists' development and their coming together in Arles, and how this influenced their use of dramatic colour. It includes the best-loved paintings of both Gauguin and van Gogh, on a vast scale.

Images are projected onto the flat walls inside the quarry, and even on the hottest day it is chilly inside, so bring a warm top.

The Carrieres de Lumieres is at the foot of Les Baux, making for a good two-destination day trip.
