Maison des Voutes, Ansouis, Provence

Historic village house with marvellous views and plunge pool

The house from the street in the quiet village of Ansouis, and the castle seen from the plunge pool terrace upstairs.

Maison de Voutes is a delightful house dating back to the 16th century in the perfect Provence village of Ansouis - apart from the idyllic and peaceful setting the house has wonderful views, a plunge pool, air conditioning, and even a garage. The house is not suitable for under-8s, and rentals run Sunday to Sunday.

Living Rooms

The kitchen and dining room with their ancient wooden beams overhead.

On the ground floor are the kitchen, going through to dining room and living room. These rooms are air conditioned. The kitchen has a 4-ring cooker, small oven, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, Nespresso and coffee machine. Separately there are washing machine and dryer, and a second freezer. The beautiful centuries-old wooden beams are exposed in the ceiling of the kitchen and dining room.

The living room is centred on the fireplace and opens onto the dining terrace.

The living room is a mix of modern and antiques. A fireplace for winter rentals, leather sofa, satellite TV with English-language channels, and WiFi internet. From the living room french doors open onto the terrace and outside dining table.

The upstairs study for those who must work. The vaulted room on the lower ground floor.

Upstairs is the study with 16th century writing desk, and printer (above left).

On the lower ground floor, you will discover an even older part of the house, a large vaulted room dug into the rock, which goes back to the 13th century, and gives the house its name. The vaulted room used to be part of the chateau of Ansouis. As it goes into the rock this room is naturally cool even in summer, and is ideal for siestas, wine tasting, aperitifs and celebrations. It should be noted that in medieval times homes were much colder than now, so while delightful in the hot months, the vaulted room is not a place to relax in the colder part of the year. Because the house is built on a slope, the room has natural light as it opens onto the street level.

There are three double bedrooms upstairs and two bathrooms, one of which is downstairs. There is also a shower room in the vaulted room on the lower ground floor. The house sleeps 6 people.

The master bedroom and its terrace.

The master bedroom (above) has a 1.4m-wide bed (4.6ft) and opens onto the terrace with high, wide view (below left). The master bedroom is air conditioned.

The bathroom next to the master bedroom has a bath and shower, basin and WC.

The second bedroom and its view of the castle.

Bathroom 2 with shower.

The two other double bedrooms have a 1.4-wide bed and views of the castle of Ansouis. Both bedrooms lead out to the terrace with plunge pool and sunloungers.

Down a level is the second bathroom with shower and basin (left), featuring a fresco of the village and castle, and a separate WC.

On the lower ground floor, off the vaulted room, there is a small third bathroom with shower, basin and WC.

The third double bedroom also has a view of the castle of Ansouis.

The plunge pool is on the terrace opposite the chateau.

Upstairs on the terrace facing the castle is a small plunge pool measuring 10 x 8ft and about 3ft deep. This is ideal for cooling off in summer, and there are two sunloungers alongside.

The dining terrace on the ground floor has views far and wide over the countryside of Provence.

The ground floor terrace which comes off the living room and kitchen is the place for meals in the shade with a beautiful view of the surrounding countryside (above).

The outside of the house, in the historic heart of the village of Ansouis.

Maison des Voutes is in a quiet and calm street towards the top of the village, the only cars that pass are the occasional resident.

The house has a garage for one small car - if you have a bigger car you can use the car park 20 metres away.

Due to the pool and stairs the house is not suitable for children under 8.

Definitely going back next year!

My husband and I stayed in Maison Des Voutes for 2 weeks in July. We were met by Carmen, who was our contact while we were there. She showed us how around the house and showed us how everything worked. We fell in love with the place immediately. The owner has obviously taken a lot of time and effort to furnish Maison des Voutes with to a high standard. It is filled with many beautiful pieces of furniture, as well as pictures and ornaments. The landlady had left a bottle of Rose from her wine farm in the fridge, as well as a bottle of fruit juice. Ansouis itself is not a very big town, but has the basics - a few good restaurants, a boulangerie which serves food and sells ice creams. Ansouis is central to many wonderful places nearby, especially Lourmarin (10 minute drive), Aix-en-Provence (40 minute drive), and the coast, which is a 90 minute drive away. Their are 2 big supermarkets in nearby Pertuis. The house itself has everything you would need, ample crockery and cutlery, pots and pans, washing machine, small pool, air conditioning in the main bedroom and the lounge area, big balcony with stunning views. The owners have gone to a lot of trouble to ensure that the house is a home away from home. We will be definitely be going back next year!
