Les Marchands 1, Apt, Provence

Charming apartment for 2+1 in the heart of a lively town

Living room with big windows
Kitchen along the wall of the living room.

The apartment forms the first floor up of an 18th-century town house on Apt's main pedestrian street. All the life of this typical Provence market town is right on the doorstep, from cafes and restaurants to the biggest weekly market in the Luberon. The apartment sleeps 2, plus 1 on the sofa-bed if needed. (Minimum age is 14).

Dining table by kitchen
Bedroom on the right, living room down the corridor.

The living room and kitchen are open-plan with big windows giving plenty of light. The traditional floor tiles and beams are retained along with modern fixtures and furnishings. There is a comfortable sofa and an armchair, and TV with casting facility so you can connect your own device. The sofa can convert into a double sofa-bed for an additional guest. There is also the option of an addditional bedroom with bathroom in the same building for 50 euros/night.

The kitchen has oven, stove, dishwasher, fridge, microwave, coffee machine, kettle and toaster, as well as a dining table. Off the courtyard downstairs is a laundry room for the two apartments in the building, with washing machine/dryer and a freezer, as well as picnic equipment and space for storing bikes.

Bedroom. En suite bathroom.

The bedroom looks out to the internal courtyard, which means it is quiet. The bed is 1.4m/4.6ft-wide and the en suite bathroom has bath with overhead shower, basin and WC.

Colourful and calm inner courtyard.

On the ground floor of the building is the interior courtyard garden offering calm outside space in the centre of town. This is a shared space with Les Marchands 2 and has chairs and tables, and an antique day-bed.

Another shared space for the two apartments is the games room (above) in the vaulted cellar, this has pool table, darts and table football/foosball.

The Location

Scenes from the market town of Apt .

The apartment is in the heart of the market town of Apt, which is in the middle of the Luberon region. Everything in Apt is an easy walk away. There is the biggest street market of the Luberon on Saturdays. Apt also has supermarkets, cinema, all sorts of specialist stores, restaurants and cafes. Amid the Provencal architecture Apt is a real working town, a good place to embed yourself in local life.

Close by are the famed perched villages of the Luberon - Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult, as well as the less-known but beautiful St Saturnin les Apt, Saignon, Caseneuve, Joucas and Murs. The Luberon natural park is a small region with a high concentration of beautiful Provence landscapes - the lavender, vineyards and orchards, and dotted around are the medieval hill-top villages.

A day-trip away are Avignon, Aix en Provence, Arles, Nimes, Marseille, Les Baux de Provence, the French Riviera, and the Rhone Wine Trail.

Nearby villages: the castle at Lourmarin, shopping in Roussillon, and a street in Goult.

Home away from home...

I would highly recommend staying in this apartment to anyone wishing to explore the Luberon/Vaucluse region. The apartment is beautifully decorated with second-hand furniture that Jen and Chris have carefully sourced and restored as well as Chris’ own amazing photography of the region. The kitchen is modern and fully equipped with everything you would need and more, including, gratefully, a dishwasher. Although located at the centre of town, the apartment is not at all noisy. It is spacious, comfortable and secure; there are laundry facilities, bike storage and a shared internal courtyard - great for morning coffees or evening drinks. Apt is a lively old town and, contrary to one popular travel guide, not somewhere to simply pass through. The large local market held on Saturdays is unmissable and begins literally at the front door. It is possible to do most of your weekly shop there. If not, within spitting distance, there is a very good bakery, a boucherie, a vegetable shop, a fair few pharmacies and a bookshop. A short walk away on the outskirts of the town is the more general Intermarche. Other supermarkets are accessible by car. There are also several nice restaurants and bars which Jen and Chris can point you towards, ranging from simple creperies and pizzerias to more indulgent dining. Apt makes a fantastic base for visiting other towns and destinations in the region. You could see a great deal if you hire a car but, if you have time to enjoy the scenery and energy to get up the hills, Apt is situated on three well established cycle routes. It has at least three bike hire shops offering e-bikes (recommended) and push bikes (verging on masochistic). The most popular spots like Rouisillon, Bonnieux and Menerbes are at most a 1.5hr cycle away but well worth visiting are some of the smaller villages closer to Apt such as Villars, Saignon and St-Saturnin-Les-Apt. Alternatively, the buses from Apt are reliable and affordable and go between most of the local villages as well as long distance to Aix en Provence; Avignon and Marseilles. Jen and Chris are superb hosts. They are incredibly attentive, generous, patient and resourceful, willing to answer and or research any and all questions about the area and offer their own recommendations. It is clear that they have put their heart and soul into renovating the house and making it a home. It really is a joy to hear them talk in detail about the history of the house, much of which they are still uncovering. I have thoroughly enjoyed spending the summer with them and have every intention on returning as soon as I can!

Style and comfort in the heart of the Luberon

Your hosts Chris and Jen have worked very hard to create the most wonderful oasis in the historic center of Apt. The apartment is spacious, spotlessly clean and so comfortable it felt like I was in my own home. The house is fully equipped and we wanted for nothing. We loved being here so much we changed our plane tickets to have a few more days there and in this beautiful part of France. The cheeses, chocolates, wine, and meats available were literally steps from the front door which is located on the lovely main pedestrian street in Apt. The location is perfect for exploring the Luberon. Having fallen in love with the area I am already planning my return in 6 months. If you are lucky enough to find this apartment available do not hesitate to book it. Thank you again, Chris and Jen! Our stay in Apt was absolute perfection!
