Bastide St Pierre, , Provence

Exuberant, theatrical grand house near Avignon, for up to 12 people

The bastide dates back to the renaissance and was extended in the 17th and 18th centuries by an Avignon aristocrat. The interior is an extraordinary meld of colours and theatricality which has made this house a favourite of books on Provence and interiors magazines. The house has six bedrooms and 6 bathrooms, and sleeps a maximum of 12 people.

Living Rooms

The fabulous Red Room, with its fireplace flanked by Renaissance decorative fountains, and timeworn pebble floor, is the place for a snooze after lunch or a read before dinner.

In the kitchen is everything you would need to feed a small army. A wide oven with 5-ring cooker, dishwasher, American fridge-freezer, pantry, and a host of cooking aids. There is a very large work surface for preparation and at the other end a dining table.

The kitchen opens onto the courtyard and also the garden and there are dining tables just outside.

The clothes washing machine is in a room apart from the kitchen, along with an additional freezer and a drinks fridge.

The kitchen combines an industrial look with very Provencal decorative elements.

There are two more sitting rooms in addition to the red room, both of them in a distinctive style and equally appealing. The ochre room pictured left and right is full of interesting objects as well as a daybed to relax on or a desk to write at.

Next to this is the study with shelves of books and a TV with French channels and 250 movies on DVD.

There are two other TVs in bedrooms with CanalSat channels (all the French ones plus CNN, BBC World and many others).

There is also free wireless internet.

There are two bedrooms that are accessed from the courtyard. The Stable Room (below) retains some features of its former life as a stable. The bed is 1.6m wide (5.25ft) and the en suite bathroom has a bathtub, handheld shower, WC and basin.

The sixth bedroom (left) has a double bed and a couple of daybeds, and is ideal for youngsters. The bathroom has bathtub, handheld shower, WC and basin.

The Stable Bedroom with its magnificent beams still has a stone feeding trough and other features from its past

Garden & Pool

The bastide is set in 5000 square metres of garden, with areas of lawn and gravel, high shading trees, climbing roses bursting with colour, and a swimming basin discreetly to the side.

The garden is bordered with fruit orchards, growing apricots, peaches and apples.

The swimming basin is 10m x 2m (33 x 7ft) and alongside is a trellised tunnel of climbing roses. There are sunloungers and deckchairs for the pool area.

The pool is very enticing, with its rich verdant surround, stone border and roman steps at one end.

Vines and orchards by the pool.
Fruit trees in blossom.

Entrance to the courtyard. The courtyard is thick with climbers, creepers and potted plants.

The large courtyard is the heart of the bastide in the summer. Bedrooms look onto it, the kitchen spills out into it, and people eat there, play petanque or ping pong, and find a shaded spot under a tree or trellis.

Across the courtyard from the main house, the barn (pictured right) provides a dramatic space for dinner, with its high beamed roof and spectacular chandelier.

The Location

Boulbon with its chateau above.
Cafe in Boulbon.
Chateau de Barbentane.

The Bastide de Saint Pierre is by the tiny village of St Pierre de Mezoargues in the Alpilles region of Provence. The village has a small food store. The village of Boulbon is 3km (2 miles) away, and has grocery, cafe, restaurant and post office, and the larger village of Barbentane is 10 minutes away.

The house is within 20 minutes of the fascinating cities of Avignon and Tarascon, and so is centrally located for all that Provence has to offer - the Luberon and Cote d'Azur to the east, the Rhone wine trail to the north, the Camargue, Les Baux, Aix and Marseille to the south, and Nimes and the Languedoc to the west. All would make an idyllic day or half-day trip.
