Bastide de Vaugines, Cucuron, Provence

Simple elegance in the olives and vineyards

The house seen from its olive grove. View from the pool to the Luberon mountain.

Bastide de Vaugines is a stunningly renovated farmhouse bordered by its olive orchard and vineyard, close to the wonderful Luberon villages of Lourmarin and Cucuron. It sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms.

Living Rooms

The living room with its fireplace and dining table is a room full of light (these pics were taken in winter).

The house has been decorated in a spirit of simple elegance, with white the dominant colour and only pure materials used: stone, lime, concrete, wood and linen. All the rooms are full of light and free of clutter.

On the ground floor the living room is set around the fireplace, with dining table at the back. The kitchen comes off this room and is equipped with oven and 4-ring cooker top, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, microwave. The washing machine is in the pantry.

Kitchen combining old and new.

With underfloor heating and fireplace the house is very welcoming whatever the season. There is WiFi internet, and a TV can be supplied on request.

Bedrooms

The house has 3 double bedrooms and two singles, sleeping 8 people.

Spacious upstairs double bedroom.

Three of the bedrooms are upstairs: a spacious double (above) with 1.6m-wide bed (5.25ft), and two single rooms (below). The double room also has a small annex suitable for a baby cot.

The two single rooms upstairs.

These three upstairs bedrooms share a very stylish bathroom (below) with shower, basin and WC.

The upstairs bathroom, with baroque touches, has shower basin and WC.

On the ground floor off the living room (below) is a double bedroom with 1.6m-wide double bed (5.25ft), and en suite bathroom with shower, basin and WC. This room opens out onto the south terrace.

Ground floor double off the living room with its en suite bathroom.

This is an old farmhouse at heart and so the third double bedroom (below) is on the ground floor but you access it down a stone staircase from a half-level. This room also has a 1.6m-wide double bed and en suite bathroom with shower, basin and WC (below right). It opens out to the olive grove and a view of the Luberon mountain.

Garden & Pool

The pool to the back of the house and on the other side of the wall is the south terrace with dining and BBQ.

The house is set in 36 acres of beautiful olive groves and vineyards, planted with cypress, fig trees and pines, with wide views of the Luberon mountain.

At the front is the south-facing terrace with dining table and BBQ (above right), shaded from sun and wind, and at the back is the pool and lawn (above left).

The pool is 11 x 3.5 metres (36 x 11 ft) and has an electric sliding cover for security.

All around the terrace and garden are different spots to get together or find a place of your own.

The Location

Lourmarin with its Renaissance chateau and striking outline.

The house has a great location close to 3 beautiful villages. Less than a mile away is the tiny village of Vaugines, so picturesque that it was used to film 'Jean de Florette'.

Two miles away is Cucuron, which combines fantastic looks, medieval history and charm with all the amenities you need: bakeries, butchers, grocery store, bank, cafes and restaurants, and even a Michelin-starred restaurant (La Petite Maison). At the centre of Cucuron is its huge water basin surrounded by centuries-old plane trees, which you may remember from the film 'A Good Year'. This is where the weekly market takes place, and is also home to restaurants and cafes.

Three miles away is Lourmarin, with its many restaurants, cafes spilling onto the street, and boutiques. Lourmarin is one of the star villages of the Luberon, and is alive year-round.

The surrounding countryside is a tapestry of vineyards and olive groves, with the Luberon mountain hemming the north side. Close by are other beautiful Luberon villages - Bonnieux, Ansouis, Cadenet, La Tour d'Aigues. The villages of the northern Luberon are reached through the cut in the mountain from Lourmarin to Bonnieux, giving you access to Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult, etc. as well as the picturesque towns of Isle sur la Sorgue and Fontaine de Vaucluse.

The splendid city of Aix-en-Provence is 40 minutes to the south, and within 90 minutes are Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail. The French Riviera is 2 hours away and you can be swimming in the sea in less than 90 minutes.

The village of Cucuron, 2 miles away, offers many delights, from the medieval rooftops to the weekly market.
