The Location

The house is 2km (1.2 miles) from the stunning village of Gordes, which is the biggest of the Luberon hill-top villages, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops and cultural events, so it is an ideal base from which to explore the Luberon and Provence.

The Luberon is known for the beauty of its perched villages, in addition to Gordes, close by are Menerbes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Oppede-le-vieux, Roussillon and many others. Each is a short drive away.

You'll find a market every day at a different village, including the one in Gordes on Tuesday mornings.

Away from the Luberon, the rest of Provence is at most a day-trip away: the cities of Avignon, Aix, Arles, Nimes, Marseille; the natural wonders of the Gorges du Verdon, the Alps and the Rhone wine trail; the French Riviera (Cote d'Azur) from Monte Carlo to St Tropez. Even Italy and Spain are in striking distance.

Brilliant base in the Luberon

I've stayed at Gordes Vista before, this time was a short break around the new year. The house is well laid out for family life and or entertaining. In the summer the terrace is the focus for meals and meeting with it's fantastic views across the Luberon and oversight of the pool. This time we sat around the large open fire in the evenings taking dinner at the extendable dining table in the drawing room and breakfast and lunch at the smaller table in the living room. Its a good place for a crowd because there are plenty of places to be with others in smaller or larger groups or just to find a corner to quietly read. The kitchen is well equipped and has direct access to the terrace and living room which makes it easy if you are cooking for yourself and very practical if you have staff. The pool is heavenly with it's separate pool house. Being on a lower terrace, it is very private whilst still having extensive views over the expanse of open land before it. You could spend the entire holiday without leaving the house but there's lots of good things to see and do around. Gordes is brilliant of course but there are many other villages a perfect distance to drive for lunch or an aperitif or the obligatory market days.
