Provence House, Gordes, Provence

Large designer property near Gordes

A house like no other, near the dreamy village of Gordes, in the Luberon region of Provence, it offers grand Provencal living with four bedrooms/four bathrooms, for weekly rentals. (Please note, children must be 7+ years old).

The joy of this property is that it is made up of two spacious houses, whose front doors face each other, each with 2 bedrooms, and each with a distinctive decor. What they share is a sense of space, both in terms of large volumes and in the amount of places that you can call your own - terraces, hidden patios, garden nooks - for couples spending time together this also means you can spend time apart and find a delightful spot to do your own thing.

Living Rooms

Contemporary living room with double height ceiling.

The contemporary living room (above) is full of fine books, art and curiosities, as well as a link to the outside world through TV/DVD. It has a double-height ceiling and is full of light, connecting with the garden through the wall of French windows (pictured at top left of this page). Off this room is bedroom 1 and up the stairs is bedroom 2.

Living room with sofas by the fireplace and writing desk.

In the other house the living room (above and below) is more cosy but still rich with art and books. Through french doors you join the raised terrace with dining table.

The dining room (below right) could be a shrine to Provence, with an amazing collection of antique furniture and crockery, curiosities and objets trouvés, as well as the dining table by the fireplace.

Kitchen and dining room.

The kitchen is very well equipped, as the hosts like to entertain on a grand scale. In the summer you will usually want to eat outside, on the raised terrace with view, or by the pool, or in one of several other shaded spots you can choose from.

Bedrooms

The four bedrooms are completely private, no two bedrooms are even on the same floor, and each has its own outside space and en suite bathroom. There are three doubles and one twin room with two single beds.

Bedroom 1 with its en suite bathroom.

Bedroom 1 (above), on the ground floor, opens on to the garden. The bed is 1.6m wide (5'6"). Between bedroom and bathroom is the dressing room. The bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 2 and en suite bathroom.

Bedroom 2 (above) is upstairs from bedroom 1, has two single beds and opens on to a private terrace. Its en suite bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 3 and en suite bathroom.

Bedroom 3 (above) has a 1.8m-wide bed (6ft), TV, and terrace with 180-degree views of the surrounding countryside. It also has air conditioning. The en suite bathroom comprises bathtub and wetroom-type shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 4 and its bathroom with shower.

Bedroom 4 (above) opens on to the swimming pool area, and is like an artist's studio, large and light, and decked with paintings. There is an open-plan bathroom with walk-in shower. The WC is separate. The bed is 1.5m wide (5ft). This bedroom is accessed by stairs down from the ground floor and so is private from the rest of the house.

Garden & Pool

The swimming pool is 10m long and has comfortable seating on sunloungers with mattresses, and tables for meals or drinks. To the side of the pool, in a lush dell of semi-tropical foliage, is another dining table (below left) - you can't have too many al fresco dining options. By the pool is a summer kitchen with cooker, fridge/freezer, dishwasher. The pool can be heated at a cost of 100 euros per week.

There is an abundance of outside spaces for eating, lounging and relaxing. In the summer you will find cooler spots amid the thick foliage.

Right at the top is the terrace of bedroom 3 with its view of the Luberon and three of the most beautiful villages (above right).

Above is the balcony closest to the kitchen and overlooking the pool.

The owners spend the summer months in another house on the same grounds but well away from the Provence House, so you are not aware of it, with its own access from the road. They are available if you have any problems or need any advice on restaurants, villages, events, etc. The owners have two well-behaved and friendly dogs.

There is plenty of private parking.

The Location

Gordes, 4 miles away, is one of the most beautiful villages in France.

The house is in quiet and beautiful countryside, right in the Golden Triangle of the Luberon, with the closest villages Gordes, 4 miles away, and Goult, 2.5miles away.

Around the house you will find cherry trees where you can eat your fill in May and June, and a total calm broken only by birdsong and the choir of cicadas. You can wonder the hilltop behind the house and discover stone structures of antiquity - dolmen, borie, menhir, a Roman path - and get to the village of Gordes across country in 45 minutes.

Gordes and Goult are two of the most striking villages of Provence. Gordes is the most majestic of the Luberon hill-top villages, with plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops and cultural events, while Goult is a relatively unknown treasure, with good eateries and a beautifully preserved old neighbourhood with bakery, butcher, grocery store.

Close by are all the other notable hill-top villages like Menerbes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Goult, Oppede le vieux, and Roussillon. Each is 10-15 minutes away, and Lourmarin is 30 minutes.

Fontaine de Vaucluse and the antiques capital of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue are 15 minutes away, the medieval city of Avignon is 40 minutes, and within an hour or so are Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Arles, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

You'll find a market every day at a different village, including the one in Gordes on Tuesday mornings.

An Extraordinary Stay - Magnifique!

From arrival to departure, this amazing home and wonderful hosts make a trip to Provence and the Luberon Valley a magical experience. The two homes that make up this residence and secure compound are truly spectacular - spacious, warm, charming, elegant, restful - filled with wonderful art and plenty of areas to gather together or to be alone and contemplate the incredible surroundings. The pictures on the website do not do the home justice. The house is incredibly well-maintained and outfitted with every convenience. A library of books to browse that can engage you for weeks! Wonderful bedroom accommodations (four) each with individual bath. Great kitchens fully equipped for the most demanding of chefs. Superb pool. Great washer / dryer / laundry facilities. Unbelievable views over the valley and villages of the area. Accessible to great hiking trails leaving right from the property entrance. Incredibly well located to visit all the villages of the area - 45 minutes to Avignon, only minutes from Goult and Gordes. Literally less than 30 minutes to 25+ villages such as Lacoste, Bonnieux, Rouission. Superb dining options too numerous to count in all the surrounding villages. Definitely would recommend The Provence House / The Art House as "the" place to stay in the Luberon! Our stay was for three weeks and could easily have stayed longer (wish we had!)
