Mas du Figuier, Joucas, Provence

4-bedroom Provence rental at the foot of the hill-top village of Joucas in the Luberon

This lovely old stone house sleeps 8 in 4 bedrooms, has wide Provence country views towards the Luberon mountain, but also the village of Joucas with its amenities right on its doorstep. Mas du Figuier is surrounded by lavender fields, orchards and vineyards in the 'golden triangle' of the Luberon. There is a 2-week minimum rental period in July-August.

Living Rooms

The house has two living rooms, one with TV and one with dining table.

There are two living rooms, the smaller one with fireplace and TV, and the larger one with dining table, opening onto the terrace. Between the two is the kitchen which has oven, 4-ring cooker, dishwasher, fridge, freezer, and washing machine.

The kitchen is between the two living rooms.

The house has free WiFi internet.

Bedrooms

The 4 bedrooms are upstairs, and there are two bathrooms, as well as a small shower room with WC downstairs. Due to the curiosities of construction of an old house, there are two sets of stairs going up to the bedrooms, and bedroom 3 is accessed either through the master bedroom or bedroom 2 (see below).

The master bedroom is very spacious and has an additional bed for a child.

The large master bedroom has two single beds together and a third bed suitable for a young child, as well as a writing desk. Its en suite bathroom has walk-in shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 2 (below) has two single beds and is across the landing from bedroom 4.

Bedrooms 2, 3 and 4 share the large family bathroom with its bathtub, separate shower, two basins and WC. There is also a separate WC next to this bathroom.

Garden & Pool

Outside the house is blessed with wide open views to the south and the beautiful medieval village of Joucas just behind.

The pool has a great setting at the end of the lawn, edged by a bed of aromatic herbs of Provence - below is a field of lavender and beyond that is just beautiful scenery as far as the Luberon mountain.

At the front of the house is the courtyard, with the stunning views of Provence.

The courtyard has tables and chairs for eating and relaxing, and is shaded by a fig tree, a mulberry and an olive tree. Another lovely spot to sit is the shaded table of the poolhouse (below). There is also a gas BBQ.

Around the pool are sunloungers and mattresses, and there is also a boules/petanques court (above right) to enliven the evening aperitif.

Joucas could not be any closer, above right are the gates to the house.

Behind the house is the perched hilltop village of Joucas, just a quick stroll through the vines away.

The Location

Scenes from the village of Joucas.

The house is at the foot of Joucas, one of the lovely hill-top villages of the Luberon. Joucas has a food store, cafe, tennis courts and a playground. And surprisingly for a small, quiet village, there are three good restaurants in walking distance.

All the other picture-perfect 'perched' hill-top villages of the Luberon are within 15 minutes by car: Gordes, Roussillon, Menerbes, Bonnieux, Lacoste, Goult, and Oppede le vieux. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages.

You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.

The perfect Luberon escape

We came for a family escape in the Luberon and this was the most perfect retreat. Mas du Figuier is a beautiful stone farmhouse within the most stunning setting and is surrounded by vineyards and lavender fields. The south facing garden is totally secluded and entirely peaceful with beautiful views south of the Luberon hills and a gorgeous pool to relax by. A large fig tree shades the main courtyard and gives a perfect setting for dining. The house is beautifully kept by the owner and has a wonderful family feel to it, and is one of the best houses for a game of hide and seek. Joucas is much quieter than neighbouring villages but has a great restaurant with stunning views and a small shop with essentials. The location was perfect - a peaceful retreat but close enough to the larger Luberon villages nearby. The main problem was that we loved the house and garden so much that we found it difficult to get out to see more of the surrounding areas. We will definitely be coming back.

Beautiful place!

We came with friends to spend a week in the Lubéron. September is just beautiful! A typical Provencal house with pool and lavender fields :) A professional petanque track that we have used a lot. A perfect time to enjoy the pool and to visit this region without too much tourists. We will come back! Thank you to the owners for this beautiful place:)

The property also has a lavender field at the front and rear of the property. The house has a lovely sitting/dining room which opens onto a patio, perfect for al fresco dining. The patio has a lovely and productive fig tree and overlooks the garden, swimming pool and Luberon Hills in the distance. The swimming pool sits above a boules or petanque court which provides endless entertainment whilst enjoying sundowners and taking in the views. The house is perfectly located to explore the major sites in the Luberon, only 10 minutes drive to Gordes and Roussillon, It is a great property for a family to enjoy the delights of Provence!
