Mas de l'Olivier, Lacoste, Provence

18th century farmhouse converted into stunning designer home for 10

Mas de l'Olivier is an interior-designed, renovated 18th century farm, on a country road between the wonderful villages of Menerbes and Lacoste. With 5 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms, the house provides great comfort and modernity (including heated pool) in a rustic Provence setting.

Living Rooms

The house is set around a beautiful central courtyard, stone-paved and ancient, with the living and dining room forming one side of the square.

The living room with comfortable seating and TV/DVD, and dining table next to the kitchen.

The big living room has comfortable sofas and armchair at one end, with satellite TV, and dining table at the other end. There are floor-to-ceiling glass bays opening onto the courtyard. The TV has English-language channels like CNN, Sky News and BBC World. For entertainment there is also an AppleTV, which means you can buy and watch films on your itunes account. The house has two Bose iPod/MP3 docks.

The kitchen is beautifully equipped, with 5-ring cooker, large oven, fridge-freezer, dishwasher, coffee machine, kettle, toaster and all the cookery ware you might need. In a separate laundry room are the clothes washer and dryer.

The house has WiFi internet. Cooking and baby-sitting services can also be arranged with the housekeeper.

Bedrooms

The 5 bedrooms are each uniquely styled and each has an en suite bathroom. Two of the bedrooms are accessed by an outside staircase and so offer privacy from the rest of the house.

With its soft tones, exposed beams, Italian bedlinen, antique furniture and extra-large bathroom, the master suite (above) provides sumptuous ground floor accommodation. The bed is 1.6m wide (5.25ft). In the bathroom are a big walk-in shower, pedestal bath, double basins and WC.

Garden & Pool

The house is set around an inner courtyard, and beyond that are garden and terrace, with shaded dining and relaxing, over three acres of land and the heated pool.

The heated pool is on a raised lawn at the back of the house.

The pool is 10m x 4m (33 x 13ft) and heated from May to October. It has a pool alarm in line with French regulations, and also a gate and wall which is designed to keep toddlers out. Around the pool are lawn and sunloungers, and the shade of the trees.

The terrace with pergola is to the back of the house next to the pool area.

The terrace (above) is sheltered by a large pergola and has a dining table and BBQ, and a summer lounge.

You can also eat inside the centuries-old courtyard (below) to the gentle sound of the fountain.

The courtyard, paved with stone, is the heart of the house.

The courtyard is the open-air 'room' at the heart of the house. Living room, kitchen and bedroom 2 open out to this space, with its stone-paved floor and sculpted olive tree.

The Location

Menerbes on its hilltop from the north.

The square at the top.

The house is in the countryside between the stunning villages of Menerbes and Lacoste in the heart of the Luberon. Both are medieval, hill-top villages, officially recognised as among The Most Beautiful Villages of France. Lacoste is 1 mile away, Menerbes is 3 miles.

All the other picture-perfect 'perched' hill-top villages of the Luberon are within 15 minutes by car: GordesBonnieuxRoussillonOppede le vieux, Goult, etc.

Within an hour are the splendid towns of Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail. Even closer are Lourmarin, the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue, and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges fully formed from deep underground.

Tthere is a market every day in a different village close by. The best for local produce is the farmer's market 10 minutes away in Coustellet on Sunday mornings (April-December).

Lacoste, perched high above the Luberon plain, is still dominated by the castle of the Marquis de Sade.

Peaceful

We've spent 3 weeks in that beautiful and peaceful place. The house is very well managed and with a great team to welcome you. The environment is calm with a great view the Luberon hill and oaks all around the house. Our kids loved the heated swimming pool. I'd strongly recommend the suite papillon that is incredible. I'll come back again next year.

Really sublime

This is a very stylish home, beautifully furnished with a lot of care and attention to all the details. If you want a lovely pool with views up to the Luberon hills, a light filled sitting room with a large expanse of glazing to a sublime and completely private courtyard, a great soundsystem, and a perfect location in the Luberon, then this is the place. The main bedroom suite is worth fighting over. We had a week here in 2017 and hope to return. Very helpful owner too.
