The Location
The house is in quiet countryside in the delightful part of Provence known as the Luberon, which is where Peter Mayle wrote 'A Year in Provence'. The closest village is the tiny, peaceful Lioux. It is too small to have any shops or restaurants, but it is a lovely place to visit, as it is built right at the foot of the massive Sainte-Madeleine cliff.
Lioux is 2km from the house. In the other direction, 4km away, is Joucas, one of the lovely hill-top villages of the Luberon. Joucas has a food store, cafe, tennis courts and a playground. And surprisingly for a small, quiet village, there are three good restaurants in walking distance.
All the other picture-perfect 'perched' hill-top villages of the Luberon are within 15 minutes by car: Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.
Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.
There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages.
You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.
