Bastide les Amis, Menerbes, Provence

5-bedroom house with pool and garden in an unbeatable village location

Bastide Les Amis is a 5-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom house in a totally calm setting in the village of Menerbes in the Luberon. The village centre with its restaurants, bar and shops is a 2-minute stroll away.

The property is made up of two adjoining houses together. Connection between the two is external, both downstairs and upstairs. The larger of the houses is big enough for 10 people during the day, so the smaller house need only be used for sleeping. Or if two groups want a little privacy from each other, the property is ideally suited.

The kitchen has an AGA stove with gas cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, and dishwasher. (In fact the property has two well-equipped kitchens but you are more likely to use this one as it is at the heart of the house). There is a separate laundry room with Miele washing machine and tumble dryer.

Garden & Pool

The house has a beautifully tended garden, which is unusually large for a village house, and spreads out over different levels. There are three different outdoor dining tables to choose from, and all sorts of spots for sitting and relaxing.

The pool is 9 x 3.8 metres (30 x 12 ft) with Roman steps at one end, and poolhouse with summer kitchen at the other.

The spacious lawn to the side of the house, with a third dining table under the tree.

To the side of the house is a terrace with pergola cover and beyond that the lawn (above).

To the back of the house is the large garden on four levels. First there is the rear patio with dining table and barbecue (above), then up a level to the pool with summer kitchen. Two more terraced levels provide places for seclusion and enjoying the views to the north.

The shaded terrace to the side offers one of the three outdoor dining tables.

The poolhouse (above) has a summer kitchen with dishwasher, fridge and and ice machine, dining table and barbecue. There is a WC too.

Two spots to gather in the garden, the gazebo and the gravelled second level.

The garden is a very relaxing place with its many colours and scents, and there is plenty of room to roam and find one's own private spot.

There is off-street parking for more than one car. The road is only used by residents so it is a quiet, peaceful setting and only 2 minutes stroll into the centre of Menerbes.

The Location

Menerbes on its hilltop from the north (left) and from the east (right).

The village of Menerbes is a wonderful location and ideal for exploring the rest of the Luberon and Provence. Menerbes has everything you need - cafe, restaurants, bakery, and a small grocery store. You can even get the Herald Tribune and UK press when you walk in for your croissants or coffee in the morning.

All the other picture-perfect 'perched' hill-top villages of the Luberon are within 15 minutes by car: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages, and in Menerbes itself there is a market on Thursdays.

You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.

Scenes from Menerbes. There is a well stocked little grocery, bar, restaurants, baker and butcher.

Quintessential Provence

We were a group of 7 woman celebrating some of our 50th birthdays. This property was in the perfect location. It was easy to walk up the hill to Menerbes. The gardens, pool and charming interior touches were all delightful. The home was clean and well stocked. The beds & linens were comfortable and of high quality. Lovone was easy to contact and very responsive. We easily explored the local hill towns but decided Menerbes was the perfect location with just enough restaurants, shops and bakeries. We all hope to return and will definitely rebook Bastide les amis. I would highly recommend this property.

Perfect Village House

Bastide Des Amis is a beatiful house on the edge of one the most perfect hilltop villages in the luberon. What sets it apart is the attention to detail and level of comfort the owners have created in every area of the properties. We stayed for 2 wonderful weeks and it was the perfect holiday, we loved being able to walk into the village morning and evening, loved the houses and would definitely return.

Fabulous location to live like a 'local'

We leave the Luberon with many wonderful memories. Thank you for being able to share your beautiful home – we wanted for nothing during our stay. We found the village most welcoming and almost became ‘locals’. The location is central to everything we wanted to see and every day we were still surprised at the beauty and picturesque qualities. Maybe one day we will return to Menerbes and stay for longer.
