Le Refuge, Menerbes, Provence

1-bedroom Provence haven tucked away in its own valley

This house served as a refuge for the French resistance, and even though it is only 5 minutes drive to the beautiful village of Menerbes, you feel like you are in a lost valley and the cares of the world are far away. The house is built into the rock and faces south to the sun. The extraordinary 'rolling wave' of the cliff-face behind adds to the impression of a sheltered refuge.

You arrive at the house through an arch, into the courtyard with three different seating areas (pictured above and below).

On the ground floor are the kitchen/living room and the bathroom, and up the outside steps is the bedroom.

The kitchen has fridge, microwave, 2-ring cooker, grill and coffee machine. Also in the room is a couch and dining table.

The house has WiFi internet.

In the bathroom are bathtub, overhead shower, WC, basin and clothes washing machine.

The bedroom is up the stairs, above the kitchen/living room.

In the cosy bedroom upstairs is a double bed for 2 people and TV with French channels.

Below the house is a terraced garden and after that a vineyard - from the house you can stride out into the countryside for walks. The owner's house is 20 metres away from Le Refuge, handy in case of any problems or if you need help with anything.

The boules court with bbq grill provides a very Provencal way to spend a summer evening.

There is a petanque/boules court (above), with summer kitchen consisting of barbecue grill and sink. From this area steps lead up to the level above the house, the top of the cliff, from where you have a view of the Luberon mountain (pictured below).

Above the house the clifftop levels out and offers a view of the Luberon mountain.

The house is accessed by a path suitable for cars and there is parking by the property.

The Location

The house is 2km from the village of Menerbes, and is an ideal location for exploring the rest of the Luberon and Provence. Menerbes has everything you need - cafe, restaurants, bakery, butcher and a small grocery store.

Within 15 minutes of Menerbes are other outstanding villages like Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages.

You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.

Most Memorable Stay in Provence

We have been coming to the Luberon Region for 20 years and this was by far the best experience we have had! We celebrated Alan's birthday and our 26th wedding anniversary and had been planning this trip for while. We were so fortunate to have found La Refuge and especially Marie. She was the kindest and most helpful host we could have asked for. Her wonderful attitude, spirit, and generosity meant so much to us and added to our experience. We stayed 2 weeks and wish we could have spent 2 more. The house and grounds were beautiful and its secluded setting was exactly what we were wanting for our vacation. It was also so nice to be so close to Menerbes, that we enjoyed walking there some mornings. We enjoyed the farmers markets and the wonderful small local restaurants in Menerbes and the surrounding hilltop villages but mostly we enjoyed driving and walking around the beautiful countryside. Quiet afternoons in the garden and dinners on the patio were heavenly! We are looking forward to returning here next year. Marie - thanks for helping us practice our French!

The perfect getaway

It is hard to say what is more charming about Le Refuge, the place itself or its wonderful owner, Marie. Tucked in a hidden private valley, you feel far away from the cares of the world. The house has been very sympathetically restored by Marie and it is a joy to spend time drinking in the sights, scents and sounds of Provence from the terrace. Le Refuge isn't far from many of the Luberon's best villages and we found it very easy to tour them either by bike or car. We didn't eat out much because the terrace of Le Refuge is the perfect spot for a romantic meal. Marie herself is a wonderful, kind person. Full of excellent stories and great recommendations. We would love to go back and visit her again.
