Le Refuge, Menerbes, Provence

1-bedroom Provence haven tucked away in its own valley

This house served as a refuge for the French resistance, and even though it is only 5 minutes drive to the beautiful village of Menerbes, you feel like you are in a lost valley and the cares of the world are far away. The house is built into the rock and faces south to the sun. The extraordinary 'rolling wave' of the cliff-face behind adds to the impression of a sheltered refuge.

You arrive at the house through an arch, into the courtyard with three different seating areas (pictured above and below).

On the ground floor are the kitchen/living room and the bathroom, and up the outside steps is the bedroom.

The steps lead up to the bedroom and to the right of these on the ground floor is the kitchen/living room (above right).

Below the house is a terraced garden and after that a vineyard - from the house you can stride out into the countryside for walks. The owner's house is 20 metres away from Le Refuge, handy in case of any problems or if you need help with anything.

The boules court with bbq grill provides a very Provencal way to spend a summer evening.

There is a petanque/boules court (above), with summer kitchen consisting of barbecue grill and sink. From this area steps lead up to the level above the house, the top of the cliff, from where you have a view of the Luberon mountain (pictured below).

Above the house the clifftop levels out and offers a view of the Luberon mountain.

The house is accessed by a path suitable for cars and there is parking by the property.

The Location

The house is 2km from the village of Menerbes, and is an ideal location for exploring the rest of the Luberon and Provence. Menerbes has everything you need - cafe, restaurants, bakery, butcher and a small grocery store.

Within 15 minutes of Menerbes are other outstanding villages like Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, and Goult. Just beyond are the antiques capital of Isle sur la Sorgue and the very lovely Fontaine de Vaucluse.

Within an hour are Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, St Remy, Mont Ventoux, Les Baux de Provence, Orange, and the start of the Rhone wine trail.

There is a market every day in one of the surrounding villages.

You can make a comfortable day-trip of the Cote d'Azur from Monte Carlo to St Tropez, Marseille, the fishing village of Cassis and the calanques, Arles, Nimes, the Camargue, the Alps, the Gorges du Verdon, and the Rhone wine trail all the way to Lyon.

An excellent stay

Discovering the Luberon from the Refuge has been a beautiful experience. Ideally located for those who love peace and nature, the warm welcome of Marie is a bonus. We were delighted with our stay and would love to come back!

A Hidden Gem

I eyed this rental for several years before booking - I was mesmerized by how fascinating & magical the setting appeared to be. On my first trip to visit Marie in 2015, I was not disappointed. The photos cannot begin to evoke the true experience of the place. In addition to the rental itself, there are extensive gardens and various levels to explore both above and beneath the property. I immediately fell in love with it - so much so that I've returned every year since, each year deepening my friendship with Marie. The accommodations are very well appointed, and the exterior spaces - upper and lower resting places so tranquil for those days one wishes to just luxuriate in feeling truly at peace, so removed from the hurried pace of modern life. Marie has a heart of gold and is so helpful from the moment one arrives - with many great insights and suggestions with regards to things to see and do - in addition to generous time lingering in shared conversation over a glass of wine. Though off the beaten track, requiring faith in taking the various rough roads to enter the property, one realizes its those various secret roads that keep the property away from the throes of other tourists. That said, Menerbes is just ten miinutes away and easily accessed with its regular market on Thursday mornings. This location works well as a base to venture to other areas such as Gordes, Rouissillon, Lourmarins, Bonnieux, LaCoste (just across the valley), Oppede, Oppede le Vieux (a fav of mine) and so many of the dear hilltop towns of this area. I actually feel more at oeace while visiting Marie and Le Refuge than I do at my home in the States. If it is an experience like no other. Though I missed my trip this year owing to the passing of my husband, I can't wait to return next Spring. I've enjoyed the experience in May - with bountiful blooms of so many different flowers - as well in September - when the summer crowds have subsided and the golden glow of oncoming fall hints a bit cooler temperatures at night but still very warm days for adventure. To me, Le Refuge is a bit of heaven on Earth. Highly recommend - you won't be disappointed!!!
