Domaine St Jacques, Methamis, Provence

Authentic Provence manor house in 180 acres of private countryside

Domaine St Jacques is a magnificent 900-year old Provence mansion on a hill between the villages of Methamis and Blauvac, at the foot of the Mont Ventoux. The house sleeps up to 12 people, and is spacious and full of period details, from the original beams and floors to historical curiosities. Its vast grounds make this a very private and peaceful spot in an idyllic part of Provence.

Living Rooms

The main part of this house dates back to the 15th century, with the oldest parts going back to the 1100s. The house is full of historical charm and interest. The exposed beams and flagstone floors are original, from the 1400s.

Sofas face each other at one end of the entrance hall, by the staircase in the turret.

Downstairs there are several reception rooms, so large groups can spread out and find their own space, as well as the kitchen and dining room.

Entrance hall with baby grand piano, through to dining room.

In the entrance hall is a baby grand piano and sitting area, and at the back a magnificent round staircase fills one of the turrets. Off the entrance is the dining room to one side and to the other are various sitting rooms.

The new kitchen which opens out to the dining terrace by the pool.

The kitchen is newly fitted and is equipped with a 5-ring cooker, large oven, dishwasher, American fridge-freezer, and everything you might need to prepare a banquet. The laundry room is separate with washer and dryer.

Next to the kitchen is the dining room (below left), and the kitchen also opens out to the terrace with outdoor dining table by the pool.

Dining room and TV den.

The TV den (above right) has satellite channels including CNN, and there is WiFi internet.

Living room with fireplace and reading room.

There are two other living rooms (above) coming off the entrance hall, each with its own personality, one for cosy evenings round the fireplace, and the other a reading room.

The grand staircase in the turret and the writing table at the top of the staircase.

The house can be staffed according to your needs. A housekeeper can clean up after meals, for example, or she can cook and do housework every day. There is a caretaker who lives in a separate house on the property and can respond quickly to any problems.

Upstairs are six bedrooms and five bathrooms. Three bedrooms are doubles, one is a twin, and the other 2 can be either a twin or a double. The house sleeps a maximum of 12 people.

Garden & Pool

There are 8 acres around the house that are fenced, but the property's land goes on well beyond that with over 180 acres of vineyards, woods, truffle oaks and lavender. It's a private slice of Provence countryside.

Pool area is gated and fenced for safety.

To the south side is the large pool measuring 14m x 7m (46 x 23ft). The pool is fenced and gated for children's security. Indeed the house is ideal for a multi-generation family holiday.

Terraced lawns by the house.

On other sides of the house are large lawns on two levels, with beds of lavender and cypress trees, and a vineyard. For adults and children alike this is a Provence paradise.

Along one side of the house is the walled courtyard (below), with table and chairs, laid to gravel.

At the centre of the house is the inner courtyard with the shade of the chestnut tree.

The terrace between house and pool has the shade of a huge oak tree for outside dining (below). This is where the kitchen door is situated.

The south terrace between pool and kitchen for dining under the shade of a magnificent oak.

The house is set well away from a quiet country road so this is a totally peaceful and quiet location.

There is plenty of secure, gated parking outside the courtyard.

The Location

Mont Ventoux is close by, as are the beautiful villages of Methamis and Venasque.

There are many beautiful Provence villages close by, like Methamis and Venasque, as well as specialist producers of goat cheese, honey, truffles and wine. The major Provence town of Carpentras is 20 minutes away, and Avignon 40 minutes away, both important cultural centres of the region.

The Luberon proper is 30 minutes to the south, with its famed perched villages like Bonnieux, Gordes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult and Lourmarin, as well as the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue.

Just on the doorstep is Ventoux country, a spectacular landscape of vineyards and gentle hills for hiking, biking or driving from village to village.

Venasque centre, Ventoux driving country, and the village of La Roque-sur-Pernes.

magnificent provençal chateau

The Domaine Saint Jacques is quite simply magnificent! It was described to me by someone as 'dans son jus' which means 'in it's juice'. One could say 'authentique'. But it is more than that. It is magical. The rooms are all characterful, with many nooks and crannies, sitting and lounging areas, each with their own character, and you are in a real Provençal home. Most stunning of all are the inner courtyard and the grounds with one of the most beautiful trees I have ever seen creating shade enough to eat al fresco even during the hottest days of summer. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this home whole heartedly.

Absolutely wonderful stay at Domaine St Jacques!

We have stayed at Domaine St Jacques for one week the latest 3 years and we absolutely love it! The house is stunning and carries a breeze of history and it feels like every room tells a story. All rooms and kitchen are found in an very tasteful interior that carries the history but still being modern. The surroundings are breathtaking and brings peace and calm to the stay. The family is warm, caring and makes it easy to feel at home. I recommend Domaine St Jacques with all of my heart and we will definitely come back!
