Garden & Pool

Whatever the season this is a house where you spend as much time as possible outside. The view is magnificent, and the front of the house is south-facing so you get sun all day. If the wind blows you are sheltered on the main patio.

The swimming pool is down a level from the house, so that you cannot see it from the main patio level - it doesn't intrude on the view. The pool is 9m x 4m (30 x 13 ft) and shares in the glorious far-reaching view.

Aerial shot of house and pool, and the front terrace seen from the side of the house.

You can eat at the table outside the dining room (below right) or for maximum shade there is a snug outdoor dining room by the Weber barbecue.

There are 4 acres of garden, garrigue and woods, featuring olive trees, santolina, irises, roses, lavender, rosemary - all the familiar colours and scents of Provence.

There is plenty of parking behind the house. The house is at the end of a 100-yard path from the road (which is a quiet road).

The garden soon blends into the wild countryside of Provence.

The owner is English and lives in the same village, and is on hand in case of any difficulties or language problems.

The Location

The idyllic, peaceful village of Murs in the Luberon.

The lovely village of Murs, 1km away, is officially one of the little delights of the Luberon that has yet to be 'discovered'. The village has a food shop with bakery, and a restaurant with bar ('Le Crillon'). Murs is peaceful and picturesque, with some notable architecture dating back to the Middle Ages. It is 11km from Gordes, which is perhaps the biggest village of the Luberon.

It is said that the painters chose Gordes and Roussillon, the writers chose Lourmarin, and the wise chose Murs, and have kept quiet about it.

Using the house as a base you have all the other attractions of the Luberon close at hand, not least the other perched villages like Menerbes, Roussillon, Lacoste, Oppede le vieux, Bonnieux, Goult, etc.

There is a market in a nearby village every day of the week.

Isle sur la Sorgue with its famous antiques market and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the emerald Sorgue comes gushing out of the ground, are also close and in under 90 minutes you can be in Avignon, Aix-en-Provence, les Baux de Provence and St Remy.

Nearby Gordes is also one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Great holiday and fabulous villa

This is the most charming villa we have ever stayed. It lives up to the description and more. The facilities are all first rate and on top of that the villa has a very homely feel to it. I stayed with my wife, two adult children and their spouses so six in all and there was plenty of space for everyone. The villa was spotless when we arrived, the garden was well maintained and the pool was clean and inviting. The owners son and daughter-in-law both came to welcome us and then to follow-up to make sure everything was OK. They also provided us on where the best supermarket was, where to eat and places to visit we had not thought of. The view is spectacular and can not be bettered. In the evening sitting on the terrace sipping a glass of the local produce and looking out over the magnificent landscape was a highlight of the day. The village of Murs is very small but quaint; it has a convenience store for food etc, a restaurant and also a pottery which is delightful as is the owner. This is a great location to see all the well known and incredibly pretty villages in this area which are all a short drive away. When I return to visit this area again, and I will return, I will definitely come back to La Coquiere. Thank you Theo and Marie or being so hospitable and generous with your time and to Ann for letting us share this piece of heaven on earth.

Best vacation

We had the most wonderful experience last Sept. 3 couples rented for last 2 weeks in Sept. and had the best vacation ever. The house is extremely well equipped and situated with the most fabulous view. There are many books and reference materials to help discover the markets and near-by towns. We have visited France many times but this was the best, most comfortable vacation ever. Be sure to try the restaurant in Murs for a fabulous meal.

We had a wonderful time

The house is located about a mile outside of the little town of Murs, and is a about 10 minute drive to Gordes. From the patio you can see the towns of Rousillion, Goult, Bonnieux, and Menerbes across the valley. It is easy to get to all of the towns in the Luberon, as well as the other major cities in Provence. It is a lovely Provencal home (that is, a lot of character and charm), and the patio/pool/garden area is wonderful. You can sit outside and have your meals while overlooking the entire Luberon. While you can get most of your food at the various daily markets in the area, there is also a little grocery store up the hill just outside of Murs for staples (toiletries, coffee, milk, sugar, water, some veggies and pastries).
