La Fontaine du Patio, Oppede le Vieux, Provence

A gem of a rental perfect for a Provence-loving couple

La Fontaine du Patio is a very charming, cosy rental partly built into the vaulted rooms of a an old wine cellar, and with a spacious courtyard and patio outside. It is one of six exclusive small rentals on a stunning 10-acre Provence property, each with its own private outside space, and a shared pool and tennis court.

Living Room

The living room and kitchen in subtle Provence shades.

You enter into the living room/kitchen with its ancient beamed ceiling and tiled floor. Furnishings are simple, elegant and comfortable. The living room has satellite TV with English-language channels CNN and BBC World, and WiFi internet.

The kitchen is well equipped half-size oven and dishwasher, 4-ring cooker, and fridge-freezer.

Kitchen and dining table.

Alongside the kitchen is a dining table and chairs, there are also tables outside in the courtyard and on the patio.

Bedroom

The bedroom has a 1.6m-wide bed (5ft 3") and beautiful en suite bathroom with clawfoot bath, walk-in shower, basin and separate WC. These rooms, as you can tell from the vaulted ceilings, were once a wine cellar.

Garden & Pool

The courtyard and patio offer places to rest and enjoy long outdoor meals.

Outside you can eat and relax in a large verdant courtyard with the shade of a fig tree and the fountain that gives the house its name. There is also a raised patio by the door with view of the Luberon over the olive trees.

The pool is 12m x 5m and is shared with the other rental properties that form the estate, as is the tennis court.

The setting is pure Provence, the 10 acres of grounds are planted with olive orchards, lavender, oaks and cypress trees. Being on top of a small hill gives wonderful views over vineyards, with the Luberon mountain close by and the iconic village of Oppede le vieux halfway up its flank.

Fitness & Leisure

There is a splendid artificial grass tennis court for guests' use.

Also on the grounds are a small fitness room and a big lounge with piano and big-screen entertainment.

Massages and reflexology sessions can also be organised at the house.

Breakfast of croissants and baguette can be delivered to your doorstep in the morning (15 euros per day).

The lounge (left) and fitness room (right) are for the use of all guests.

The Location

Scenes from nearby villages: Gordes, the church at Oppede le vieux, and Senanque Abbey.

The house is in the vineyards between the villages of Maubec and Oppede, and Oppede le vieux. It is under a mile to a cafe, two restaurants, three bakeries, butcher and a grocery store.

The Luberon's famous hill-top villages are all within 15 minutes: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult, etc. And the towns like the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue, and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges fully formed from deep underground.

Within an hour are the splendid Provence cities of Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail.

If you are coming to Provence to relax rather than take everything in, there is a market every day in a different village close by. The best for local produce is the farmer's market 5 minutes away in Coustellet on Sunday mornings (April-December). And there are wineries all around where you can taste their recent offerings and buy by the bottle.

The castle at Lourmarin, shopping in Roussillon, and a street in Goult.

The Real Provence

The estate has a number of beautiful character properties in the grounds, or linked to the main house. They are beautiful, classic Luberon. Wonderful views in a tranquil setting, with a well situated pool, and extremely well appointed tennis court. I would thoroughly recommend a stay for anyone, families or couples, looking for a delightful and genuine holiday in Provence.

Just beautiful!

This property is just beautiful! We stayed with our little baby in La Fontaine du Patio which was perfect for us. The garden with the pool is amazing and Vita (the owner) and her husband are very friendly and helpful. It's perfectly located, as it is very close to many beautiful towns in Luberon. Thank you so much Vita for the wonderful stay, we will definitely come back!
