Le Moulin, Oppede le Vieux, Provence
Romantic and unique Provence rental - an ancient windmill above the vineyards
![]() | ![]() |
This is the perfect spot for a romantic couple of any age: a 500-year-old windmill converted into a 1-bedroom Provence lovenest, on a hill with gorgeous Luberon views, within a mile of three Luberon villages. Le Moulin is one of six exclusive small rentals on a stunning 10-acre Provence estate with shared pool and tennis court, and is set well away from any other properties.
Living Room

Downstairs in one space are the kitchen and living room. The living room has a sofa, satellite TV with English-language channels CNN and BBC World, and WiFi internet.

The kitchen is well equipped with half-size oven and dishwasher, 4-ring cooker, fridge-freezer, toaster, and electric kettle. This beautiful round room is where the mill-stone would have turned, and this mill-stone is now the outside dining table. Above the kitchen the builder's mark shows that this windmill had the same builder as the famous windmill of Alphonse Daudet (see Letters from my Windmill).
Bedroom

Upstairs is another round room, with double bed and a bathroom with shower, basin and WC. In the walls, symmetrical and mysterious niches tell of the past life of this building, before it became this most romantic of rentals.

Garden & Pool

The windmill is elevated above the tapestry of vines and orchards that makes up the Luberon valley, with the Luberon mountain across the way.
![]() | ![]() |
There is outside dining (on the old millstone) in the shade of a 300-year-old oak tree, and about 100 metres away is the pool which is shared with the other rental properties that form the estate.

The 10-acre grounds are delightful and encapsulate the best of Provence: olive trees and cypresses, lavender and iris, stunning views all around.

The Location

Scenes from nearby villages: Gordes, the church at Oppede le vieux, and Senanque Abbey.
The house is in the vineyards between the villages of Maubec and Oppede, and Oppede le vieux. It is under a mile to a cafe, two restaurants, three bakeries, butcher and a grocery store.
The Luberon's famous hill-top villages are all within 15 minutes: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult, etc. And the towns like the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue, and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges fully formed from deep underground.
Within an hour are the splendid Provence cities of Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail.
If you are coming to Provence to relax rather than take everything in, there is a market every day in a different village close by. The best for local produce is the farmer's market 5 minutes away in Coustellet on Sunday mornings (April-December). And there are wineries all around where you can taste their recent offerings and buy by the bottle.

The castle at Lourmarin, shopping in Roussillon, and a street in Goult.

This is paradise
We stayed here 7 years ago and loved it, nothing has changed it's as beautiful as ever. This is the real Provence, not so much a tourist destination but a private home that Victorine shares with others. Except you have your own private apartment with outdoor eating. The area around this magnificent home is exquisite. The Luberon mountains loom up in front of you with the grapevines sprawled out seductively below. They are calling you.....come taste our wine and it's good. The local food is wonderful and there's plenty to explore. There's the semi deserted hilltop stone village called Oppede Le Vieux which is worth the climb! As well as the other hilltop towns of Menerbes, Bonnieux, Gordes, Rousillon.......etc. etc. Plan to stay more than a few days, you'll be sorry if you don't! So much to see, the fresh foodmarkets are wonderful, the antique market at Isle sur Le Sorgue on a Sunday is a must. And the light show in the caves at Le Baux de Provence is beyond exceptional. Astonishing!!! A car is necessary to get around but it's easy driving around the area. Pickup and drop off at Avignon TGV. Victorine is a wonderful host, we absolutely loved our stay here again. Next time it will be longer, much longer and when it's hot so we can swim in the beautiful pool overlooking the mountains! A tennis court is available, in short you have everything here for a magical holiday.

The Real Provence
The estate has a number of beautiful character properties in the grounds, or linked to the main house. They are beautiful, classic Luberon. Wonderful views in a tranquil setting, with a well situated pool, and extremely well appointed tennis court. I would thoroughly recommend a stay for anyone, families or couples, looking for a delightful and genuine holiday in Provence.

Tranquil elegance in a gorgeous setting
On a classic country estate set in the most gorgeous part of the Luberon, looking out over the hills and the evocative ruins of Oppede Le Vieux. There are several houses available, we stayed in the former mill, Le Moulin, which is a lovely romantic and very private two story round building, complete with a small kitchen, eating and sitting area and serene terrace overlooking the mountains and vineyards. Your hostess Victorine is extremely gracious and elegant, and very helpful with recommendations for restaurants, etc. The ruins of the unbelievably picturesque abandoned hill fortress of Oppede are a short walk away, and there are ancient paths throughout the surrounding countryside to explore. There is also a tennis court and lovely pool. The place is lovely, tranquil and perfectly located for exploring the Luberon.
