Le Metayer, Oppede le Vieux, Provence

Delightful Provence cottage with pool in stunning Oppede setting

Le Metayer seen from the garden. The pool area.

This delightful little house with a wonderful view dates back to the 16th century and has retained original features, like the fireplace and the beams. Added to that are furnishings of great comfort, with three bedrooms sleeping 5 people. Le Metayer is one of six exclusive small rentals on a stunning 10-acre Provence property, each with its own private outside space, and a shared pool and tennis court.

Living Rooms

Living room with 17th century beams and modern comforts.

Sunny kitchen with Provencal colours.

You enter the house through the sunny kitchen. This is well equipped with oven, 4-ring cooker, dishwasher, fridge-freezer, toaster, electric kettle, and dining table. There is also a table and chairs right outside the kitchen under the shade of the pergola.

The living room is very Provencal with its ancient beams and fireplace, and also has a large TV with English channels like CNN and BBC World. There is free WiFi internet.

Breakfast can be provided, with fresh croissants and bread from the bakery. You can have this at the owner's house or delivered to your door every morning.

Spacious master bedroom with wonderful period features.

There are two double bedrooms and one single. The showpiece of the house is the big main bedroom, with its 16th century fireplace (not in use), and original niches and alcoves in the walls.

The main bedrooms and the single bedroom (above left) share a bathroom (above right) with claw-foot bath-tub, walk-in shower, basin and separate WC. Also tucked away is the washing machine. The single bed is 1.2m wide (4ft), so too narrow for two people.

Bedroom 2 and its en suite bathroom.

Fitness & Leisure

There is a splendid artificial grass tennis court for guests' use.

Also on the grounds are a small fitness room and a big lounge with piano and big-screen entertainment.

Massages and reflexology sessions can also be organised at the house.

Breakfast of croissants and baguette can be delivered to your doorstep in the morning (15 euros per day).

The lounge (left) and fitness room (right) are for the use of all guests.

Garden & Pool

Le Metayer has a private patio with a lovely view over vineyards, to the Luberon mountain with the iconic medieval village of Oppede le vieux perched on its flank. The pool and gardens are shared with the other rentals on the property, as is the tennis court.

The patio is outside the kitchen and is an idyllic setting for meals for at least 6 months of the year. It is shaded by a trellis on a wrought-iron pergola.

The 10-acre garden is mainly olive orchard, oaks, cypress and lavender.

Views out from the estate over surrounding countryside.

The Location

Scenes from nearby villages: Gordes, the church at Oppede le vieux, and Senanque Abbey.

The house is in the vineyards between the villages of Maubec and Oppede, and Oppede le vieux. It is under a mile to a cafe, two restaurants, three bakeries, butcher and a grocery store.

The Luberon's famous hill-top villages are all within 15 minutes: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, Goult, etc. And the towns like the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue, and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges fully formed from deep underground.

Within an hour are the splendid Provence cities of Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail.

If you are coming to Provence to relax rather than take everything in, there is a market every day in a different village close by. The best for local produce is the farmer's market 5 minutes away in Coustellet on Sunday mornings (April-December). And there are wineries all around where you can taste their recent offerings and buy by the bottle.

The castle at Lourmarin, shopping in Roussillon, and a street in Goult.

This is paradise

We stayed here 7 years ago and loved it, nothing has changed it's as beautiful as ever. This is the real Provence, not so much a tourist destination but a private home that Victorine shares with others. Except you have your own private apartment with outdoor eating. The area around this magnificent home is exquisite. The Luberon mountains loom up in front of you with the grapevines sprawled out seductively below. They are calling you.....come taste our wine and it's good. The local food is wonderful and there's plenty to explore. There's the semi deserted hilltop stone village called Oppede Le Vieux which is worth the climb! As well as the other hilltop towns of Menerbes, Bonnieux, Gordes, Rousillon.......etc. etc. Plan to stay more than a few days, you'll be sorry if you don't! So much to see, the fresh foodmarkets are wonderful, the antique market at Isle sur Le Sorgue on a Sunday is a must. And the light show in the caves at Le Baux de Provence is beyond exceptional. Astonishing!!! A car is necessary to get around but it's easy driving around the area. Pickup and drop off at Avignon TGV. Victorine is a wonderful host, we absolutely loved our stay here again. Next time it will be longer, much longer and when it's hot so we can swim in the beautiful pool overlooking the mountains! A tennis court is available, in short you have everything here for a magical holiday.

The Real Provence

The estate has a number of beautiful character properties in the grounds, or linked to the main house. They are beautiful, classic Luberon. Wonderful views in a tranquil setting, with a well situated pool, and extremely well appointed tennis court. I would thoroughly recommend a stay for anyone, families or couples, looking for a delightful and genuine holiday in Provence.

A beautiful place to stay

We had such a lovely week staying here. It felt like paradise. We were in need of some rest and relaxation and this provided that and tons more. We loved everything about the place from the pretty 'cottages' to the scenery, the ancient oak woodland, the birds, the views, the tennis court and the swimming pool. The owner Vita is amazing helpful and kind, any questions or advice and she is delighted to help.
