Le Mas du Hameau, Oppede le Vieux, Provence

Provence rental with a sense of joie de vivre in Oppede

The house has a very inviting walled courtyard on the sunny south side.

A 17th century 3-bedroom Provence house with a modern twist, with a south-facing courtyard, hot tub and bar, making an ideal summer rental between the villages of Oppede and Oppede-le-Vieux.

Living Rooms

The rooms on the ground floor face south onto the courtyard - these are the living room, dining room, bar and kitchen.

Living room with steps to the upstairs. Dining room between living room and bar.

The living room has a long sofa and an ottoman, and opens through to the dining room with its fireplace and armchairs. There is a sound system with CD player.

Dining room with fireplace, with living room beyond.

The highlight of the house is the loving recreation of a real French bar (below), with tables, bar and stools, and TV - a fun spot for convivial evenings, spilling out onto the terrace with its shading trees and hot tub.

The house has its own bar room.

The kitchen has everything you'd need: oven, 4-ring cooker, microwave, American fridge-freezer, dishwasher, food processor, coffee machine and Nespresso.

Well-equipped kitchen which opens onto the courtyard.

Upstairs is the TV den (below left) with DVD library for kids and grown-ups, and Playstation 3 with games. There are English-language channels as well as all the French channels and Canal+.

Looking down on the dining room from upstairs. The converted barn with big screen and projector.

The converted barn (above right) provides a shaded lunch spot, and also has a huge screen across one wall with video projector for movie nights.

There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms, sleeping 6. One of the bedrooms and bathrooms is downstairs.

Master bedroom with TV/DVD and sitting room.

The master bedroom upstairs (above) has a 1.6m-wide bed (5.25ft), and sitting area with TV/DVD. This room shares the bathroom which is en suite to bedroom 2 (below).

Bedroom 2, and the upstairs bathroom with shower.

Bedroom 2 is a big space suited to play and relaxing, with TV/DVD and sofa, and it has air conditioning. It has a 1.4m/4.6ft-wide bed and en suite bathroom with shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom 3 is downstairs and has an en suite bathroom with shower, and dressing room with cross trainer machine.

The third bedroom, downstairs, is a 1.4m-wide double (4.5ft), which opens onto the courtyard. It has a bathroom and dressing room en suite, with shower, basin and WC, as well as a cross trainer for keeping fit (above right).

The outside space is a lovely walled courtyard, with shading pine tree, hot tub under the pergola, a couple of tables for meals, decking and gravel underfoot. It is a private and very appealing space, by day or night with its atmospheric lighting.

The courtyard has big wicker seats to sink into, and a hammock in a shady corner. The hot tub is sunk into the decking and takes 5 people - 3 seated and 2 lying down. It is shaded by the pergola overhead.

Opposite the hot-tub is a modernist fountain (below left), lending the sound of running water to the courtyard (can be turned off too).

For outdoor cooking there are a plancha and deep-fat fryer (below right). And of course, boules, because Provence isn't Provence without a game of boules.

The Location

In the centre of the picture is the medieval village of Oppede le vieux, halfway up the Luberon mountain, seen from the vineyards of the newer Oppede in the valley.

Oppede is two villages, the amazingly well preserved medieval part called Oppede-le-Vieux up on the hill, and down below the more modern Oppede with its bar-restaurant, baker, grocery and pizzeria. The house is 1km (0.6 mile) away from both. Oppede-le-Vieux also has a couple of eateries and a pavement cafe.

The Luberon's famous hill-top villages are all within 15 minutes: Gordes, Bonnieux, Roussillon, Lacoste, Menerbes, etc.

Within an hour are the splendid towns of Avignon, Arles, St Remy, Tarascon, Orange, Aix-en-Provence, Nimes, as well as the Camargue, Marseille, and the Rhone wine trail. Even closer are Lourmarin, the antiques mecca of Isle sur la Sorgue, and Fontaine de Vaucluse, where the Sorgue river emerges fully formed from deep underground.

If you are coming to Provence to relax rather than take everything in, there is a market every day in a different village close by. The best for local produce is the farmer's market 5 minutes away in Coustellet on Sunday mornings (April-December). And there are wineries all around where you can taste their recent offerings and buy by the bottle or carfull.

Mas du Hameau

What a delightful heaven in Oppède this is! It is comfortable inside with all the essentials that a top-quality house can provide. We enjoyed the special design elements inside the house a lot, especially the spacious rooms allowing for a comfortable family stay. The outside areas - dining table, casual seating, whirlpool area, all provide places to relax or socialize as you wish. The owner and property manager both were very helpful and their recommendations were more than useful.

Perfect Retreat in Provence

Having a place like Mas du Hameau to call home during our stay in the Luberon truly enriched our vacation. It was exaclty what we hoped it would be, and more, when we booked it. It is unique in design, spacious and well equiped, vey clean and quite convenient to all the places we wanted to visit. There were 4 of us and we were all able to find our space both in the house and the beautiful garden, where we could to be together, or to be peacefully alone. After spending a day visiting the spectacular hill towns and driving through the lovely countryside it was wonderful to know we would come back to Mas du Hameau and just be.. We all agreed that we return to the lovely little village of Oppede le Vieux and of course Mas du Hameau
