L'Arconade, Viens, Provence

Enchanting Provence rental house with large grounds 2km from the village of Viens
One of many outside seating areas around the house. L'Arconade seen from its lavender field.

L'Arconade is an 18th century farmhouse with large and rambling grounds extending over 9 acres of garden, fields, meadow and woods - a peaceful, rural idyll for daydreamers, artists, hikers and cyclists.

The house is to the east of Apt, in the very peaceful part of the Luberon, away from the crowds, in the hills of lavender and olive groves. There are medieval hill-top villages close by, Viens is the closest at 2 km (1.3 miles), and Cereste is 3km away. The market town of Apt is 20 minutes away.

Please note: this is a 3-bedroom house, with variable rates depending on how many bedrooms you use. But even if you only want 1 bedroom, you are still getting the whole of the house to yourself.

Living Rooms

Downstairs there are two living rooms with fireplace, a dining room, kitchen, and one bedroom and bathroom. There is an artist's studio, in case you are that way inclined. There is also wireless internet.

Upstairs are two bedrooms. The master bedroom with 1.8m-wide double (6ft 6") has a balcony which is ideal for breakfast or a shaded spot for reading. Bedroom 2 has two single beds of 90cm width (3ft 6"). The two bedrooms share a bathroom with shower, basin and WC. Both bedrooms have a door to the bathroom. On the landing between the bedrooms is a beautiful old roll-top writing desk. There is wireless internet too.

There are many places to sit outside and eat, drink, read or take in the view, if you like doing any of these things you are spoilt for choice here.

To walk around the whole property takes 40 minutes, and these are some of the sights you will see...

At the lowest level of the property is a vegetable garden with solitary pear tree watching over (above left). Other fruits that grow here are apricot, cherry, fig, apple, plum and quince. Moving back towards the house you pass the lavender field (above right) and the ancient stone basin (above centre) which still has a very slowly dripping spring feeding into it (but the basin is not suitable for bathing).

Walking up above the house you pass through a field of olive trees (above centre and below right) and then you reach what is called the 'park' (above right) where 100-year-old oak trees and wild herbs grow in an environment that is tended but seems wild, and is the perfect spot for a picnic. There are table and chairs here (below left) and a rewarding view of the house with the mountains beyond. From here you can carry on to the village of Viens on a beautiful 2km country walk, which takes about 40 minutes.

Table at the top of the 'park'. View of back of house from the top of the 'park'.

The Location

The pictures below were taken a short stroll from L'Arconade - this is wonderful hiking and cycling country, the roads are quiet and the scenery is beautiful. Also close by are the stunning Oppedette gorge and ocre-coloured Colorado provencal at Rustrel.

Wonderful house and location

My wife and I and two other couples had such a relaxing time staying here for 9 days. The house is very comfortable and has great terraces where you can enjoy a bottle of wine while admiring great views over the valley below and other areas that are ideal for a game of petanque. The house is set in a lovely and calm part of the Luberon, with little winding roads past forest and farms that get you away from it all. We enjoyed exploring Viens, with its friendly restaurant Le Petit Jardin, and Caseneuve, with the fantastic restaurant Le Sanglier Paresseux, and everything else this area has to offer. We would love to return again soon!

These few lines are to testify to how much we appreciated our stay in this beautiful home, where we helped our friends from Australia to discover this beautiful region. The Luberon, and especiallysome of the small charming villages Simiane , Valsaintes , Villars, St- Saturnin d' Apt, Roussillon , Menerbes , Lacoste, Bonnieux, without forgetting Gordes and Isle sur la Sorgue. This home, where we feel right at home, in an environment of garden and fruit trees, olive groves, and all the care the owners have put into making this a little paradise.

What a wonderful piece of paradise. The home was warm and inviting and had all the amenities that you could ask for. The surrounding area was breathtaking and enjoyable to hike. Centrally located to so many interesting towns. Would definitely return to this beautiful home.
