L'Estellan

"L'Estellan has very good food and is less expensive than comparable places nearby - i.e. Mas Tourteron or Bastide de Marie - and the menu is also more interesting. There are fixed-price menus of 29 and 38 euros, and à la carte would set you back around 50 euros.

L'Estellan is a good place for vegetarians. In most Provence restaurants there is only one non-meat dish for each course, but here the emphasis is on vegetables and fish. Starters include simple mixed leaf salad and a more adventurous carpaccio of sea-bass, or langoustine soup with squid. The main course scallops were quite delicious, fat, plump and totally fresh. Shoulder of rabbit with mashed potatoes and carré d'agneau were both exemplary. There is a choice of about 6 desserts, including the inevitable crème brulée, which is very good, and a couple of lovely chocolatey things.

The setting is very pleasant, both inside and out. At l'Estellan the palate is beige, écru and white, the décor is warm and appealing, and there is a nice terrace at the back. There is something a little odd going on with what look like tea-towels on a clothes line hanging from the ceiling, but it all seems to work well together and the exposed stone of the walls adds to the Provencal ambience. Well worth a detour.

Note: Although l'Estellan is usually described as being in Gordes, it isn't, it is in Les Imberts, a couple of miles from Gordes, and you won't want to walk it if you are staying in Gordes."
