Tartares Club

"Right opposite the Bastide de Gordes, on the road leading into the centre of Gordes village. It’s essentially a small bar with a roadside terrace covered by an awning. However the super strong patio heaters, potted palms and gentle lighting help you forget that – we were there on a damp March night and at one point asked for the heaters to be turned down. Don’t expect traditional Provencal food or décor here – the owners are up from St. Tropez and the vibe is distinctly Cote d’Azur. The menu is monopolized by the ‘tartare’ – a preparation of raw fish or meat, served with fries and salad. There are some vegetarian and some cooked dishes – though limited. Everyone in our party agreed the fish and meat was super fresh and the fries fantastic. A main course averages 15 euros.

True to its St. Tropez roots, at about 10pm, the music is turned up and the manager dons headphones and gets to work on his mix of 1970s and 1980s disco. It seems an incongruous idea for a hilltop village in the Luberon, but it worked for us.
